Tough Mudder

I am doing the TM in March and was wondering if anyboy had any tips, advice, things I should bring, what I should wear, what to eat beforehand, etc.  TIA

Re: Tough Mudder

  • I signed up for a Warrior Dash in June. I am so stalking this post.

  • 1. Tough Mudder and Warrior Dash are two entirely different beasts, like a swooping vulture and an okapi. So take that with a grain of salt. I've done short mud runs and a TM, and holy hell TM is NOTHING like the 5k mud runs I did.

    2. Which TM is it? That makes a lot of difference. Hills vs flat terrain, general climate, etc. When I did TM Virginia, there was a total of almost 10,000ft of elevation change and it was 37*F when my wave went off.

    3. When is your wave going off? That also makes a lot of difference in what I'd eat beforehand. My wave was 8:30am, I think. I ate a bagel with peanut butter, and a Gu before we went off. If it were like noon or something, I would have eaten a larger breakfast, probably with some bacon/insert other protein here. There's also excellent course support for the TM series- expect bananas, Gu, shotblocks, powerade, water, etc.

    4. Attire. Like I said above, it was 37*F on a bare October day. Here's what I wore for that (taken from a previous post here on TM..)

    a. Temperature of the day is KEY. My corral went off when it was 37 degrees outside. I wore what I would have worn for a half-marathon in that weather plus an extra layer because, you know, Chernobyl jacuzzi [it's now called Arctic Enema] and the like.

    b. You will get the sh!t kicked out of you. Cuts, rope burn, bruises, you name it. Wear things that will protect your skin, like longer tights,  long sleeves, etc.

    c. Don't wear anything thick. Because thick doesn't wick. You will be wet, muddy, etc during all of this and you don't want it hanging out on your body.

My attire for the day consisted of: C9 capri tights from Target, because they were 10 bucks and I wouldn't have cried if they got ruined. Under Armor Cold Gear long sleeve mock turtle, because I had it and it's old (again, not crying if it got ruined). A VERY BRIGHT GREEN SHIRT which made me easy for my team, our spectators, and photographers to identify (and easy to pick my group out of the Brightroom photos!). Normal socks. An old pair of shoes that were muddy from another mud event, which I donated at the end of the course. And gloves. Oh my god I don't know what I would have done without those gloves on the logs, the spider web, the turd's nest, etc. As DH said, when I finish my shadowbox for my medals from this year, those gloves are going next to my orange headband because they were also heroes of the day.

  • Here is my recap from a few months ago.  I believe there are 2 or 3 others on here who have done recaps too.

    http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/60953108.aspx

I had a protein bar, banana, sports gel and a few sips of an energy drink they were giving out beforehand.  I used gloves and was glad to have them; I probably would have been fine without them, but they did help.  If you decide to bring gloves make sure they keep their grip when wet.  I wore C9 capris from Target and a dri-fit shirt with our sleeveless team shirt over it.

I brought energy gels with me (actually kept them in my pants) and had one every three/four miles.  Those really helped since a half a banana and water wasn't cutting it every 5 miles.  I had spectators there so they held my bag for me, I didn't carry anything but the gels with me.  One guy brought a disposable camera and lost it in the Arctic Enema (previously Chernobyl Jacuzzi) which was our second obstacle.

You will have a great time.  The people are amazing and it's so much fun.  Make sure you are comfortable with what you are wearing and your hair is out of the way.  I put my hair in two braids because it's long and comes out when I run.  The last thing I wanted was to lose my rubberband from a ponytail.  If you have any other specific questions, feel free to ask.

We wore almost the same exact thing! C9 capris, dri-fit and bright green shirts!

  • Here is a link to my Tough Mudder Tampa recap:

    http://motivationalmiles.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/tough-mudder-tampa-florida/

I ate my normal pre-race foods, oatmeal with natural peanut butter and banana. Drank coffee and plenty of water. Ate a Gu 15 minutes before starting and ate banana halves and drank water at the provided aid stations. I brought a bag with a change of clothes, shoes, a towel, face wipes and body wipes. Some deodorant and lotion too. I knew it was going to be a sunny day so I wore old running shoes (I keep 2-3 old pairs on hand), and dri-fit clothes that I didn't care about throwing away afterwards. Basically anything you wear will get ruined. Also, don't forget to bring cash! We discovered that in order to buy something (food, drink, etc) you had to purchase tickets and they only accepted a minimum of $10. So keep that in mind! Good luck and hope that helps!

I am too! Have to admit I am a little nervous about the colder weather. I was spoiled with 70*. It's going to be a shock when I can't warm up after the freezing water obstacles.
  • Wha wha wha what?! You're doing it too?!?! Yay! Which day/start wave? We're Saturday 9:30am.

When I did TM VA last October I thought jumping into that damn kool aid ice cube tray was the singlemost dipsh!t thing I've ever done in my life.  But I warmed up verrrrry soon afterwards when I had to hoof it a mile and change up a double black slope.

We haven't signed up yet because we haven't finalized our team. It doesn't make sense to have to pay $30 extra to change from individual to a team. We always sign up a few months ahead of time. We will def. do Sat. too though. Last time we started at 1040. Not to completely hijack her thread, but have you heard of Hero Rush? It's April 28 in MD, only a 5k, but it's all firefighter stuff. We may try it out just to continue with the obstacle runs.
  • That sounds like fun! Unfortunately starting around that time we are tapped out for travel (and that one is like 4.5+ hours away from us). Let me know when you guys register for TM!
