Stir-the-pot: Limitations on Vasectomies

So, this bill was totally written to illustrate the hipocisy of the anti-choice bills being tossed around in Georgia right now. But, I'm lovin' it! My favorite quote from the legislator: " If we legislate women?s bodies, it?s only fair that we legislate men?s"

I realize that some people may not find this as funny as I do. What do you gals think?

  • I see her point and wanting to have discussion about it.  I have strong feelings about abortion and I think this issue gets emotional for people and can't be talked about rationally by most.

  • 1. While I understand her point in wanting to draw comparisons between telling women what to do with their bodies vs. telling men, I think introducing a totally tongue-in-cheek bill is a huge waste of legislative resources, and the discussion could have been had another way.

    2. Sperm is NOT the same as a 20 week old fetus, and I don't find the two even remotely comparable.  The argument is, in my mind, poorly executed.

    3. I agree with AmyByrd that it can be an extremely emotional topic that cannot usually be discussed rationally.  I'm guessing its even less rational for elected officials in a Bible belt state. In my personal opinion, this shouldn't even be a discussion...and I can't believe, in an over-populated country, with children who are neglected, abused, abandoned, or just otherwise not raised properly to the extent that they can't even begin to all be taken care of, that this is even a debatable issue.

Oh, good points! I especially like #1. And, yeah, it is a poorly executed argument but I get where she was going with it--to show the ridiculousness of it all. And, of course I agree with point # 3. :-)

  • I can't even go here.

An abortion at 20+ weeks (unless medically necessary)- absurd.

"Thousands of children deprived of birth" - absurd.

The fact that this is how our elected officials are spending their time - absurd.

HAHA! The more I've thought about it, the more it's just funny to me and not something that should be talked about on the floor. I get that she was trying to showcase the hypocrisy of it all, but it may not have been done very well or she could have thought of something better.

I won't touch on the abortion after 20 weeks because of the emotional aspects (which I totally get). And, my views tend to be very liberal in this case.

  • I get the sarcasm and the point it's supposed to make, but I can't seem to find it funny when it's juxtaposed alongside 20+ week abortions.  To me, it isn't even a logical comparison.

Yeah, I think that's what has bothered me most after thinking about it and reading the input from all of you. I'm totally not ashamed to admit my original thinking was based on my first glance at the article. Totally should have ready more into it. :-)

  • You can't compare preventing pregnancy to ending one.

A better argument would be something along the lines of outlawing vasectomies if BCP were outlawed.

If that ever happened, Lord help us all!

  • In law school, I edited a piece by an author arguing against female genital mutilation.  She was insistent that we publish her own drawings of a comparison of what female genital mutilation would look like if the same procedures were used on a penis.  The reasoning seems similar for both and in both instances, I think it misses the mark and doesn't really move the discussion further.

On an unrelated note regarding funny in the abortion debate - there's a lot of controversy in our state right now regarding a bill that would require all women who undergo abortions to have an ultrasound first.  The irony is that our governor who originally supported the bill (but now does not) is opposed to TSA patdowns.  John Stewart commented that "Women might consider this bill a TSA patdown inside their vagina" to make his point.  The image just cracks me up.

I think that law was also just passed in TX? If I remember, this one didn't require a woman to watch the u/s, but at least be read detailed statements about what was going on with the baby's development at the stage they were at. There was also something about waiting 24 hours after the appt before the abortion could be done.

I agree with it... I mean, I am pro-choice, but a person needs to be educated about what is going on before they make a decision like that.
