Nursery Help

I am bad at decorating.  Is my nursery going to be cute or crazy?  I put together this idea board of all of the stuff that I want to do:

I've ordered the crib, rug, and chair, and I already own the white shelf thingy. 

I was originally planning on getting the chair in dark blue, but then decided at the last minute that I wanted to get something neutral, so I could reuse it if I ever have a girl baby.

I'm thinking about painting the room a bright yellow, but I'm still undecided about that. The yellow map in the picture above is a big wall decal, and if I get it, it would be in white, not yellow.

I'm planning on making curtains, a crib skirt, and book slings, so I need to pick out fabric for that, and I have no idea what the fabric should look like.  I do have some plain white curtains that I could use in a pinch.

So usually when I "decorate" I buy a set of furniture, and I always seem to wind up with only two colors in my color palette, and rooms turn out really boring.  I'm trying to avoid that here, but I'm afraid I am going overboard, and I need to simplify things.

I need that rug immediately for Emmett's room. 

I really like everything. The cubes will come in handy for a million toys. We bought one in dark blue and it's wonderful.

The colors are a great mix too.  

ETA: I don't like that red drawer thing under the crib with the rest of your stuff but I would assume that's changeable.

Considering my kid is a month old and still doesn't have a nursery, I'm no help. But I love all the stuff you picked out.

I'm not a very creative decorator, so keep that in mind.

I like what you have - I especially think the rug ties a lot of your colors together. I suggest patterned fabric - like 2-3 coordinating fabrics. Maybe start with one you like (that has some of the colors from the rug) and then branch out from there. Your idea of a yellow wall makes me think of a yellow and white chevron print, or some other equally striking print in yellow and white and then mixing in some slightly less striking fabrics.

I should have also said I am obsessed with yellow prints lately. I found this one yesterday and I can't stop thinking about it.

I'm not sure about the crib drawer.  In some pictures it looks like an espresso color, and sometimes it looks more red.  I should have it by friday, and I'm thinking if it is actually reddish in person I am going to try to paint it either dark blue or grey.

 

Lisa, I love that fabric.  I was thinking about some sort of yellow and grey graphic print for the book slings to tie the chair and the walls together.

Especially in a kid's room, I say the more color, the better.  So, I like what you have picked out here.  I suggested painting Andy's room yellow when we moved, but was vetoed by several people.  I actually think a bright green would be cool with all of your stuff (like the lone circle on the rug).  I would go so far as to say green walls and yellow curtains.  So, yeah.  You see how I roll.  More color!  Moremoremoremore.

I love those!!  I think the whale fabric would be perfect for the crib skirt, especially if I paint that drawer blue.

Do you know where those fabrics are from?

I wouldn't do bright yellow walls.  Maybe on bright yellow wall.  I would rather see white or gray with the yellow map personally.

I don't think I would go with a super bright yellow.  Remember, you want the kid to be able to sleep in there.  Like SB suggested, maybe just do one wall in the yellow and the rest in a more neutral or calming shade.

I was originally planning on pale yellow walls (similar to the yellow dots in the rug), but then I taped paint chips to the walls in the room the other night, and the bright ones looked so nice. The thought of painting a whole room such a bold color does cause me anxiety though.  Last night I suggested to my H doing one bright yellow wall, with the white map, and then having the other walls pale yellow.  Maybe instead I should do one bright yellow, and the other walls grey?

I don't know.  I do know I want the room to be bright and colorful and cheery, so if I go with grey or white walls, I feel like I need to pull some brighter colors in somewhere else. Although maybe the yellow map would do that...

I absolutely think you can achieve bright and cheery without super yellow walls.  I definitely think a bright yellow room could be overwhelming.

With babies, you're looking for lots of contrast, right?  I might think about doing walls in a blue or blue green, with the yellow map on it.  You'll pick what's right for the room though.

Here's a bright and cheery nursery with paler walls.  I think it would work really well with a white crib and brighter bedding.

My knowledge of the yellow wall hate came from married life last week, so yea.  But I've never seen a yellow wall that I've liked. I love the one SB posted or even a green or grey color would be nice.

The picture SB posted is very similar to what I want to do.  Boxer - where did you get the shelves with the bins.  That seems very handy.

christin, you can get those cubbys and bins at target. they even make some bins to look like silly animals!

alison has a pink cubby system, and she loves to pull all her books off of them regularly.

I got mine at Target.  Lowes also sells them.  It's like $45 for the shelf, and $10 for two bins.  It's a steal.

hi, i'm lurking from ML.

first, the walls of my kid's room are BRIGHT turquoise (two different shades).  my kid is a girl.  she sleeps just fine in a bright room (though i know yellow is different from blue).

anyway, if you want a bright and cheery room, but want to keep it simple, what about pulling one of the greens i see in your little plan?  btw, the plan is gorgeous.  and you will not regret having lots of cubbies and drawers.  green is super cheery and fun, easier to get "right" without venturing into school bus territory, and would look great with lots of blue and with bright yellow accents.

and i think the white furniture will help with the cheery-ness.

ok, I'm going to go back to lowes and get some grey and green paint chips tonight.  By the end of this, I am going to have enough to do one of those paint chip projects that are so popular on pinterest.

I don't really get the "BRIGHT WALLS ARE TOO STIMULATING" thing.  Andy is a fine sleeper with his once acidic-green walls and now punch-you-in-the-face blue.

I'm sitting on SB's couch in a non-yellow room. I think there has been research that babies cry more in yellow rooms.  I think yellow accents are great but I think the yellow walls might be overwhelming. Especially at night when you want a calming environment.

We have that dresser (but in espresso) in Isaiah's room. It is great. We have a changing pad on it and I thought it might be too tall for me (I'm 5'4") but it's great not to have to lean over at all during diaper changes. Plus there is a lot of extra room on the top for a basket of diaper supplies, a lamp, etc.

I'd actually be more worried about them being too stimulating for me. The last thing I want at my sixth middle-of-the-night feeding is a bright wall jumping out at me.
