Tell me about some new awesome food item you discovered recently...

Not a recipe for something, but an actual ingredient or packaged or prepared food, no matter! I'm just curious, I just love when I find some thing to eat or use...

My current faves are

Muir glen fire roasted tomatoes (well, they have been for a few years but what the heck I'll throw them out there), great in soups & certain pasta dishes, although not well suited for all things diced tomato, only certain recipes. Yummy for sure though.

Fresh market's roasted veggie frozen pizza. Yummy, easy and quite good for frozen pizza...

Penzey's soup base- yes yes, we should all make our own stock and have our freezers all stocked up, but when we don't this stuff is beyond convenient & quite tasty.

Trader Joe's pub cheese- melted as a dip! It melts great and you can add salsa or whatever to jazz it up... my kids love it plain on crackers (not melted) and I love it w/ chips or pretzels, and it seems like it is a nice less processed alternative to the other melty cheese dip type cheeses.

Re: Tell me about some new awesome food item you discovered recently...

  • Alexia frozen potato products, so far I've tried the sweet potato waffle fries and the potato wedges and like them both a lot.

    American Flatbread frozen pizza

    Penzey's everything, lol

    Pacific Natural organic condensed soups

    Um, I MUST try this.

Mine is a sad one (sad because I never tried them sooner) San Marzano tomatoes, whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy did it take me so long to realize they are BEYOND worth their price tag...

Haaaa i almost put that on my list also but thought the foodies on here would give me an eye roll, although I guess my fire roasted's are along the same lines. I only bought them the first time b/c I had some recipe that called for them & I didn't really know the difference but once I made it I realized how yummy they are...

And re the pub cheese- I bought it to spread on crackers for kids but the guy at the register (like all super helpful TJs employees, I love them.) suggested the melting w/ salsa idea!

  • Mine are all snack related...

Lemon Chobani, for so long lemon w/dairy sounded Ick! to me, but I tried it and OMG, love!

KIND bars, especially the cranberry almond one

Popcorners, I've only tried the kettle corn one

  • I am really into the Buffalo Wild Pretzel Crisps that they sell at my local grocery store. These are highly addicting!

Oh, I need to look for these...

And I also thought lemon & dairy sounded gross so maybe I need to open my horizons to the lemon Chobani...

  • Pacific Organic's Chicken Pho Broth.  I love using it as a base and then adding chicken, rice noodles, basil, lime and jalapeno.

I love Alexia frozen foods! If you haven?t already, you should try their Sauteed Sweets. Here?s the description from their website:

This savory side of sweet potatoes, sweet corn, black beans, red bell pepper, and onions is blended in chipotle-infused oil and finished with chipotle infused 100% olive oil.

I always keep a bag on hand for a quick meal. I cook the sweet potatoes and then fry an egg over easy for DH and I to have with it. Sooo good!

  • Belle Chevre Herbes de Provence Marinated Goat Cheese...we ate the jar in two days.  Belle Chevre is an excellent local goat cheese company that has been in the news a lot lately (including Southern living, if I remember correctly).  Everything I've had is amazing!
  • While in Belize on vacation, we had their pepper sauce.   My apologies, this is a recipe.

Remove the pith and seeds from 4 or 5 of ripe habaneros, slice the habaneros, slice up a small red onion, and add two tablespoons of white vinegar and two tablespoons of water.  Puree the lot and put in a capped jar for 24 hours.

We love it on eggs for breakfast or in tacos.

I realize that I am way behind the clock on the tomatoes but I never thought they could make THAT much of a difference...  Boy was I wrong.  Add to that, I'm heading to TJ's tomorrow!  It's just called pub cheese?  Or is there a specific flavor I should look for?  I never met a cheese I didn't like Big Smile

  • Biscoff cookies

Mascarpone cheese (besides using it for tiramisu) - I used it in a pasta dish, put it on my english muffins, I whipped it with powdered sugar and cocoa powder and made a "mousse" that I dipped fruit into. I had a big container to use up - but I enjoyed every last bit :)

Ha- behind the clock on here you mean? Most ppl I know have not heard of San Marzano tomatoes and I just moved recently & it is hard to find them in the regular grocery stores here...!!! So don't feel bad, like I said, I found them only by accidnet (thanks Rocco Dispiritu, one of my favorite super easy recipes still--- saute like 5 cloves of chopped garlic, add a can of strained San marzano's w/ an additional 1/2 cup of the liquid, simmer, nestle some (already cooked) thinly sliced or pounded chicken in there, fresh basil, serve over pasta, voila! yummy)

Anyhooooo. Yes, just called pub cheese, usually in the general cheese section up on a shelf and I think they make different varieties, I just buy the plain old.

Is the chicken one good? I got the beef one and I honestly almost threw up... and I'm not a picky eater! It was HORRIBLE, one of the grossest things I've had in a long time. I've had a lot of pho from a lot of places (usually chicken, but beef too) and the box stuff was so completely off. I've been making homemade chicken pho broth lately, much better.

(I'm getting nauseous just thinking about the beef broth Ick!

  • Bulgarian yogurt culture: it makes the best sweet, thick yogurt ever (Cultures for Health and New England Cheesemaking Company both sell the culture)
  • I've been enjoying Trader Joes frozen falafel on pitas with some yogurt sauce. I get quite a few servings out of the one bag of falafel!

I really like the chicken one, so does DH. I have never tried the beef.

  • I recently discovered two new cheeses - Mimolette (French) and Havarti (Danish).  The mimolette reminds me a bit of cheddar with a nuttier flavor ( you have to be brave about how its made but if you are it's worth it).  The Havarti to me resembles a jack but has a little bit of a sharpness to it. I'm really into cheese so I usually ending up buying a new type to try when I go.

I had to google mimolette after this response to see what was so weird about how it is made but I'm confused- do you mean because it is aged in some damp place or something? I don't think I'd be able to eat many interesting cheeses if aging scared me away, I will have to keep an eye out for this one!

  • From Wikipedia re Mimolette cheese...

The greyish crust of aged Mimolette is the result of cheese mites intentionally introduced to add flavor by their action on the surface of the cheese.

I don't know that I could get past this.  I probably would have tried it had I not googled it but now that I know...no thank you. Indifferent

hahaha I totally missed that part!!!! I imagine you don't eat the rind tho so you wouldn't be eating the mites.
