Local interests

Hi!

My husband and I are coming to the council bluffs/omaha area and I was wondering if anyone had any places or things that to do that would be interesting/unique to the area (not zoos or other typical tourist things).

- restaurants/shops

- I thought about a helicopter tour

- I know in some cities there are companies that give 'foodie tours' - not sure if that is popular in Omaha.

Thanks so much!!

Re: Local interests

  • But have you actually ever been to the zoo? It is one of the top in the country and certainly would not be something to miss. In fact, it would be a shame to come here and leave without seeing it.
  • Downtown Old Market area is very unique and eclectic, lots of shops, restaurants, bars to go to.  Brick roads, old buildings, just nice to walk around if the weather is as nice as it is now.  Most people love visiting the Old Market when they are in town.
  • Thanks Luvjon.

I figured locals would have a better list of ideas than tripadvisor and the such. Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can check out the old market area - that sounds fun and interesting.

Thanks. I've been to zoos all over the world and have no interest in going to one on a spouse-only trip. I'm sure it would be great with the kiddo.

  • Midtown Crossing also has some new restaurants and I think there may be a shuttle going there from downtown and back, so you could hit both areas.
  • I would definitely recommend a helicopter tour over council bluffs.Wait, no I wouldn't. But I would check out the Durham Museum (near the old market) as well as the Joslyn museum.

You would just see the results of our massive flood from last summer. Which you usually see while landing and taking off, so save your $$.

When are you going to be here?

Or rather, TONS to see... if you're into car lots and prosti's riding bikes. :)

  • There are a lot of wineries around here.  They aren't anything swanky, but fun and would let you see some of rural NE or Iowa.  In the summer a lot of them have bands/music.

  • What time of year are you coming?  That would help us know what to recommend, whether outdoors or inside, that sort of thing.

The Old Market area would definitely be one to hit - you would find a lot of good restaurants to choose from, also.

Pop into places like the Nebraska Artists Co-op:  http://incolor.inetnebr.com/pww/acg/

Hot Shops Art Center is in the northern downtown area, and there are various artists who rent space there and you can see their work (including glass blowing):  http://www.hotshopsartcenter.com/.  The Joslyn Art Museum would be a fun place, too - just west of Downtown at 24th & Dodge.

The Dundee area (50th & Underwood, just north of Dodge Street) is also a nice place to walk around (it's not large as far as restaurants/shops, though) and they have great restaurants as well.

Also check out the Omaha Chamber website for more ideas - http://www.omahachamber.org/.
