they are not. the word "squash" in chinese is also used when describing melons (watermelon, cantaloupe) but also pumpkin...so my guess it's in the melon family? .....pumpkin is a known type of squash, right? so are pumpkins melons?

^What J said.^  Pumpkins are squash (hard or winter squash; summer squashes like zucchini are, too) that grow above ground and have seeds inside.  Sweet potatoes are potato-y and the edible portion grows underground.  Melons and squash are in the same family (different genus).
