Family getaway ideas

Looking for a 3-4 day getaway with the kids sometime in the next 6 weeks. Omaha somes to mind. Beyond the zoo and the Children's Museum, what other things could we do. My in-laws are from KC so would that might not be tops of our list. Even someplace with a short flight would be worth considering. TIA

Re: Family getaway ideas

  • Just past Omaha there's the Strategic Air and Space Museum, but I haven't been there so I'm not sure what age you have to be to get anything out of it. There's also a drive-thru Safari Park, I believe at the same exit, which opens for the year in April. I'm not sure how active the animals will be yet. We were there in June and it was so hot they were all laying in the mud. :)

There's also St. Louis. The Zoo is free, though parking is not ($10 last time we were there). There's a Children's Museum there too. The kids might also like to ride up in the Arch if they don't mind the closed spaces of the elevator cars.

  • Chicago.

Seriously. There is so much to do there. If you go on the right weekend, you'll be able to hit lots of free attractions too.

  • Saw the suggestion about St. Louis and just have to say the City Museum in St. Louis is amazing!  http://www.citymuseum.org/about.html I've never taken kids, but even as an adult it was super fun and there were many kids enjoying it, too. It's in an old shoe warehouse downtown and full of interactive, unique exhibits.
