Grooming?

My pup is only 3 months old and he's go a lot of hair. I noticed matting on his butt to leg area. I think I need to take him to the groomers to have this taken care of, I've never gone before and don't really know what to expect. Anyone know the ballpark price for grooming? I know it will vary by area but I just dont want to end up paying too much. I'm seeing $40-50 and I've got a 3lb baby, although there are people who told be it should be like $20-30. If it helps we are in VA. Thank you!

Re: Grooming?

  • $40 to $50 for grooming and mat removal sounds about right to me.
  • I don't know about pricing, but puppy fur can often tangle easily (puppy coat is often very different than adult coat).  In order to avoid the matting, it is best to comb/brush regularly.  If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, I would talk to the groomer when you go and ask how you can best groom your puppy in between professional groomings.  This will make the grooming process easily on your puppy as well because he will be more used to being groomed and won't have as many mats.

  • I'm in the Boston area and pay $65 for a 60lb standard poodle.  When I had my 15lb mini she was $50.  I know that often groomers will charge more for combing out mats.  I just have my girl kept in a short clip to prevent them.  Also, brushing a puppy isn't easy!  You need to keep the sessions super short, with lots of tasty treats - Gradually increase the amount of time between treats.  Even now with my 10 month standard, I can only do one section of her at a time, she doesn't have the attention span for any more.  Good Luck!
