cutting 2 year molars

Kellen has gone through a rough time, with having the flu twice in a month (so has Gwen and my DH- ugh).  K was waking up previously and crying out in the middle of the night previously for a couple of months, and we just chalked it up to wanting mom and dad.  He would calm down when we went in there, and fall back asleep shortly after we tucked him back in.  Now, he is crying out in the middle of the night, and saying 'owwiee'.  When I go in there, he is holding his cheeks (makes me cry!).  So, I have been putting little teethers on them (and he bites my fingers when I am doing so), so I am assuming that he is in pain from the molars (dentist said they were coming through last month).  Any remedies besides the teethers, or maybe pain relievers?  We give him cold water (because he also has a nasty cough) but that doesn't last long.

TIA!
