Let's discuss curry powder

I know I've liked curry powder in chicken salad and mei fun, however, when I cook with it at home it doesn't not appeal to me.

Are all curry powders created equal? I have a grocery store brand, maybe this is the issue?

Since cumin is a main ingredient, and I don't generally care for cumin, should I give up on curry powder?

Am I just not finding the right recipes? For example both recipes were with vegetables, coconut milk, etc.

What say you?

Re: Let's discuss curry powder

  • I love curry powder now but it really took me a while to warm up to it. I've had it in terrible dishes that just did not compliment the curry powder at all.

Then I had this Haitan woman make me a warm salsa with curry and tostones and my life was changed forever. She won't give me the recipe. Dang it.

  • I hate cumin, but love curry.  I'm currently using Penzeys (Hand-mixed from: turmeric, coriander, cumin, fenugreek, ginger, nutmeg, fennel, cinnamon, white pepper, cardamom, cloves, black pepper and cayenne pepper.)

  • No. all curry powders are not created equal.  American curry powder is a blend of spices and different brands use different spices and different amounts of those spices.  You may want to blend your own.

  • Nope..they most certainly aren't.  I'm from a country where Curry is a major part of our cuisine and I refuse to buy grocery store curry powder.  I would recommend buying from the indian stores, also there are different blends of curry.  Some have less cumin so try a few out until you find a curry powder that works for you.
