Gardening - Seeds

I am really lucky my DH doesn't see my receipts, he would die if he knew I just spent $40 on seeds at Merrifield Gardening Center (and then another $40 on seed starter and vermiculite).  I can't wait to start planting this weekend.

Anyone else started?  I plan to direct sow my spinach, peas, broccoli and lettuce.  Last weekend we added new compost to the bed so it is ready to go.  I bought a lot of flowers, herbs and other veggies to start indoors as well.  If only I had more window sills... (and a little boy who didn't take everything off the window sill).

I know I over bought, if folks are interested in a seed exchange, I'm willing to share.

Re: Gardening - Seeds

  • A few weeks ago, I direct sowed some lettuce outside and started some kale inside.  It was early, but I figured it was worth the risk (seeds are cheap!).

I went ahead & started seeds for everything this past weekend.  Again, we'll probably get some freakishly cold weather in mid-April, but whatever.  The warmer weather totally has me in a spring state of mind!

  • Is there a timeline of when I need to get my seeds in ground?  I need to get the handyman guy to come out and clear out a patch for my garden.  We were going to build some raised beds, but did not get time yet....

Most summer vegetables are too tender to be planted outside now.  I you are planning to start the from seed, now is a great time to do it in a sunny window or with a grow light. Since you are just starting your garden this year, I might make it easy on myself and just buy seedlings from the garden center.  They cost a bit more money, but take a lot less time.

  • I really like these planting calendars (just put in our last frost day, 4/15)

    http://bioarray.us/Skippy's planting calendar.html

It tells you went to start seeds inside (if applicable), when to direct sow outside & went to put seedlings outside.

  • We've got eggplant started indoors downstairs. That is it, so far. I also need to do some seed shopping.
