Your favorite dog food?

What is your favorite dog food that is:

-grain free

-yeast free

-has lamb, venison, buffalo or turkey (Mendel can't eat chicken or beef).

Re: Your favorite dog food?

  • We feed Nature's Domain turkey & sweet potato.  Not sure if it's yeast free, but it is grain free.  Do you have a Costco membership?  Congrats on the new pup!  The pics aren't showing up in your OP though :(

We do have a Costco Membership...do you get your food there?

IDK what is going on with the pics, I'll try to fix that =)

  • Yes; Nature's Domain is only available at Costco.
  • We feed Taste of the Wild, alternating between lamb and fish. It is grain-free, not sure if it's yeast-free, but neither of those formulas contain chicken or beef.
  • We also feed TOTW. Have tried the bison and the lamb. So far I consider it a favorite since we were initially feeding him the Wellness core but the pup had super horrible gas and the TOTW seems to be fine. I think I will try other brands in the future, but so far we like TOTW.

  • I really like Great Life grain-free. Booker did very well on it. It comes in buffalo, chicken and salmon varieties. It's pricy, though.
  • Thanks guys! The problem I've been running into is that a lot of foods have chicken meal in them even if its not the main source of protein. They are currently on Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato but I would like to switch to a higher quality food.

I know a lot of people feed raw on here and we tried it for about 6 months. Although his allergies got better at first, raw chicken & beef just wasn't working for Mendel and we can't afford anything else. We are looking for a good supplier of affordable alternative raw protein source.
  • I usually buy Acana Grasslands or Ranchlands. Good stuff! When the dogs start to chub up I switch to Wellness CORE Reduced Fat for a few weeks.

Yes some do, but there are PLENTY that don't. We don't feed chicken for many reasons and I have no problems finding lots of foods that are chicken (and other ingredient) free. We feed TOTW and love it. The Pacific Stream has no chicken in it.

  • Taste of the Wild. My collie cannot eat chicken or turkey either - it gives him diarrhea. We feed the Pacific Stream variety, which is only salmon (no chicken). He actually has a problem with most 'common proteins' including lamb, beef, and chicken.  For wet food, we stick to buffalo, venison, rabbit, and salmon. I'm sure there are a few interesting proteins I am forgetting!

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012
  • California Natural also has a few grain free options that would probably match what you're looking for.  The ingredients are a bit more limited which might be helpful.
