Who Was Your Commencement Speaker?

The commencement speaker for this year's graduation at my alma mater was announced today - Jane Lynch (aka Sue Sylvester from Glee.)

14 years after I graduated, and I'm still mad we had to sit through Elizabeth Dole. Especially because it was supposed to be Jodie Foster and she had to cancel fairly last minute. Also, my school is crazy liberal, and Elizabeth Dole was just not a good fit.

Who spoke at your commencement?

Re: Who Was Your Commencement Speaker?

  • I graduated from UConn and ours was the CEO of Sony.  I couldn't tell you his name.  At least I know who Elizabeth Dole is!!

  • Ours was Jehan Sadat, the widow of Anwar Sadat and first lady of Egypt.

    chuck schumer

after the 1998 "biggest mudslinging campaign" for senate. he preached about the importance of education. at a university that has a very highly rated school of education. really, dude? really. i practically fell asleep during his speech.

yes, i graduated 13 years ago and am still disappointed that my very expensive tuition didn't warrant a better commencement speaker.

  • Daniel Schorr was our speaker. I liked him.

Barbra Streisand received an honorary degree and we were all hoping she'd sing. A few years before Harry Belafonte received a degree and broke into an impromptu chorus of the Banana Boat song (Day-o!), and we wanted a Streisand performance. No such luck.

Aside from the vast majority of the student body disagreeing with her politically, she was crazy boring and it was apparent from her commencement speech that she was gearing up to run for president. It was more of a campaign speech than a commencement speech.

  • The writer, Jospeh J. Ellis.  He won the national Book Award for a biography of Jefferson and the Pulitzer Prize for Founding Brothers.  His speech was interesting, he gave us what he thought Jefferson's advice to us would've been.  Particularly relevant since I graduated from Jefferson's Alma Mater.
  • I honestly don't remember.  I'd have to look it up.  Highly ranked school, great education... and they got some no-name speaker.  Very disappointing.

I think he was ours too.  We're a state school though, so for us that was a 'big name'.  Haha.

  • David Halberstam- he was great! He talked about how he graduated at the very bottom of his Harvard class and dedicated the graduation to those that barely made it. He got everyone cheering and it was fun.

  • some state senator (like, in the state senate, not on capitol hill).

he was a replacement b/c the dude (whom I don't remember) had to cancel.  it was clear this guy didn't do very much presentation & his speech was like 5 minutes.  I suppose this is good b/c graduation was huge & took forever to get through as-is.

  • I had to look it up. I have no idea who this is:

1999 (spring), Eric Schmidt, chairman of the board and CEO, Novell Inc.

  • Steven J. Gould (palentologist/evolutionary biologist) and James Wolfenson (then President of the World Bank).

  • Katherine Lee, president of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. As a class officer, I helped choose her. Today, I have no idea what she spoke about. But then, my BFF was our class president, and also gave a speech and I couldn't tell you what that was about either.

This. Considering they had Tiki Barber the year before and some guy from Dave Matthews Band the year after. I got robbed!

  • I have no idea who spoke at our undergrad commencement - I looked it up and apparently it was Maestro John Nelson. I don't have a clue what he spoke about.

For graduate school, we had George H.W. and Barbara Bush. It was the "cliff notes" of commencement speeches. They were hilarious. It wasn't political at all, and was extremely well done, I thought!

  • My undergrad didn't have one the year I graduated.  State school and they decided to call everyone by name that year.

When I graduated from law school. Scott Turow was the speaker. The wanted to get John Glenn, but he turned my school down at the last minute and the Dean was buddies with Scott Turow so he became our last minute sub. His whole speech was about Bartelby the Scrivner.  I hate Melville.  I wanted to run screaming out of there about 10 minutes into it.

  • Some horrible news woman from like cnn.

    DH had Buzz Aldrin

We attended commencements at school where we listened to Bill Cosby, George Bush, Christopher Reeves.  I was in the band so I had to be at commencements.

Reeves was the best best speaker by far!

  • Jimmy Carter.  It was supposed to be Elizabeth Dole, but she had to cancel.  I think we got a better deal out of the cancellation.
