Wellness Tests

We recently changed vets due to an out-of-state move and our new vet has suggested some tests that our previous vet never mentioned. Our new vet offers the following as a part of a wellness package:

25 chemistry blood panel

complete blood count

thyroud level

urinalysis with sediment exam

blood pressure evaluation

glaucoma exam

whole body x-rays with radiologist evaluation

teeth cleaning

Our dog is a lab and is 2.5 years old currently (no health issues to date). He is our second son, so we are willing to do whatever we need to do to keep him healthy and extend his life. Would love some input about the above. If you have these done, do you do it every year, every other year, etc? Any information or resources for me to do additional research are appreciated!

Re: Wellness Tests

  • I would not do the whole package, especially not the whole body x-rays! Completely unnecessary exposure to a lot of radiation. I'd be a little wary of a vet who pushes that as a "wellness" test.

A blood test is good to do if you can afford it, to establish a baseline for comparison if anything bad does happen.

  • This is what I'm having a hard time figuring out...what is necessary and what is being pushed for $? I'm willing to spend the $ where it will make a difference in his health. I loved my old vet so much and moving has been hard because I'm just not feeling it with this guy (we feed Fromm and every time I go in he asks what we feed, looks at me like I'm nuts bc he's never heard of it and then tells me about Royal Canin). I took the pup to another vet once for their free introductory exam and didn't love them either. He's very nice and the staff adores my dog, but he is nothing like our old vet.
