~Jamaica, Punta Cana..? pros/cons?~

so close to booking our vacation

keep on flipping between Jamaica and Punta Cana.

Anyone been to both? which did you prefer?

Jamaica looks so tropical and lush...but everyone is saying dont leave the resort. there looks like cool jungle excursions...but should we be afraid once we leave the resort?

how does Punta Cana compare?

I haven't been to Jamaica, but you will hear the same thing about PUnta Cana.  I have family in the DR, so I don't ever feel like I'm in dangeR, since Ive been there often, but I hear a lot of people do.

honestly, i wouldn't do either.  in jamaica, you're more or less trapped within your resort. you can do excursions chartered from your resort, but you can't really move around on your own.  as for punta cana, there was a poster over on the mm board a few weeks ago whose very good friend was hijacked off of the coast of DR and i have read a lot of chatter on travel boards about how things aren't all that great either.

You can't leave the resort in Punta Cana either, or you would be a fool too. I would definitely avoid Jamaica due to civil unrest. There is a reason both places are cheaper than Bermuda or the Bahamas. If you have to pick one I would do Punta Cana but don't stay more than 5 days or you will be bored to tears and make sure the resort has entertainment. We loved the Paradisius but 7 days was too long to be trapped on one resort and we hated the food in Punta Cana- yuck!

We went to Jamaica last year & loved it. Going to Punta Cana in 5 days! I'm not worried about staying at the resort. I love doing activities  there, etc. I am excited to go.

I was in Punta Cana a few years ago, and we were told not to leave the resort.  I think we could have booked guided excursions, but we didn't bother.  We just stayed at the resort the entire time.

You have to be careful anywhere you go. We went to Negril-Jamica, and traveled outside the resort with no issue. Of course we didnt go deep into the residental areas.
