They are here!!! **updated with pictures**

I picked up our two new adopted dogs today! Dapper is fitting right in and is a clown! He's had two accidents already so we need to nip that in the bud QUICK! Cocoa is VERY shy. He wouldn't come out of his crate so my mom pulled him out while I was outside with Magic and Dapper. He doesn't like any sudden movements. I took him outside since it had been awhile and he went both! He wouldn't take a treat though but I did praise him.

Any tips on getting him to warm up? I know it can take awhile but any experience with this? Thanks! I'll post pictures in a little while Smile

  • Congrats! How exciting!

I know it's too late now, but I probably wouldn't have pulled Cocoa out of his crate. I would proceed very slowly. I would suggest putting him & Dapper in a quiet room by themselves & just let them be for a while. Maybe sprinkle some treats around the room to entice him out.

Then, I might just sit quietly in the room & read a book. Don't even acknowledge him. Let him make the first move. I would talk quietly to him when he seems ready.

Give him treats for any positive interaction he makes. He might not take them from you right away, but you could put it on the floor for him to take later.

I know you just want to snuggle him & give him lots of love, but remember he's in a strange new place, like another planet, & has no idea what's going on. He's probably more terrified then when you met him before.

I have a feeling he's going to take a while to come out of his shell, but I know you're effort will be worth it.

I hope others chime in with more advice, but that's what I think I would do. Good luck. Keep us posted & post pictures!

Yea, I know it's not the best choice but since she did it, he comes in and out of the crate at his will. He's been walking around sniffing and following Dapper. I know it will take him awhile. I was sitting on the ground petting Dapper and Cocoa came over to me to sniff Smile

  • That's great. Maybe it won't take him as long to adjust as I thought. Has Magic met them yet?

Yes, and he's done great! All Magic wants to do is play, play, play! But now, Dapper has started growling at Magic. Like if I'm on the floor, Dapper will come lay on my lap. Magic will then come over to say hi to him/me and Dapper will growl when he gets close. How can I stop this? The last couple times I said no and touched Dapper's nose as I said it then put him off my lap and petted Magic. Should/could that help or am I doing more harm?

    And some pictures :)

Cocoa after coming inside from going potty. No accidents for him!

This is where they were laying while we were eating dinner. Good doggies!

  • Other people will have advice on the growling. I don't really know about that. Read up on NILIF. I'm pretty sure it mentions resource guarding which could be what he's doing.

  • Cocoa is adorable (so is Dapper)!

As for the shyness - I would continue the praise and offering treats. Eventually once Cocoa is  used to  his surroundings he will hopefully come out of his shell. He's probably very confused, having been at the vet, fixed, and then taken to a new home!
