Anyone take their child to neurologist per suggestion from teacher?

Hi ladies!  I haven't been on here in a while, but I thought of all of you when this issue came up today.

L has had some trouble sitting still in school. He is in first grade and his teacher says he is very intelligent and has passed everything with flying colors.  Today he recommended we see a neurologist and then follow up with the child study team.

If you took your child to a neurologist:

1 - what was/is their symptoms/issues?

2 - what does the appointment involve?

3 - any other helpful information would be great.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Re: Anyone take their child to neurologist per suggestion from teacher?

  • A neurologist is the only one who can officially identify ADD, ADHD, ED or autism. There are other classifications but those are ones teachers see but cannot diagnose.
  • If you are concerned about Autism or ADD/ADHD or Sensory Issues, I'd consider making an appointment with a developmental pediatrician. They are qualified to make diagnoses and they look at overall development, which I think would be better than a neurologist, whose expertise is disorders of the nervous system.

If you want a personal recommendation, I took my DS (now 2.5) to see Dr. Fadden (out of Morristown Memorial) at the recommendation of his EI evaluators. DS does not fall on to the Autism Spectrum but the visit was helpful and showed us that he has some gross motor delays and mild sensory issues.

The waiting list for most developmental pediatricians is around 6 months. The Child Development Center (where I went) has several doctors working together. The developmental pediatrician and a child psychologist, along with social workers.

  • Exactly why do they want you to follow up with the CST?   Does he currently have an IEP?

I'm just a little confused because you said he passed everything with flying colors.   Does the teacher suspect ADHD?   If he is just having trouble sitting still, it sounds like the teacher need to develop and implement some strategies to help him out a bit.

  • Although a neurologist can diagnose ADHD they usually don't.  I second a developmental pediatrician.  The neurologist we see for Matthew and Christopher will not diagnose anything other than a seizure disorder.
