Mackinac Island Question

I know a few of the ladies on here have been before, so I am looking for opinions.  We are thinking of taking a trip there for our five year anniversary, and we aren't sure where we want to stay.  I know it costs more to stay on the island, and I am wondering if it is worth it to stay there, or should we just stay in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace and take the ferry over for a day?  Also, if you have been, do you have recommendations for a place to stay?  We don't want it to be too expensive, but we would like to take a trip as a family.  Thanks ladies!

Re: Mackinac Island Question

  • Are you friends with Ari on facebook?  If she doesn't see this here, I would ask her on FB.  She seems to be quite a fan of the place.

  • We were there about 5 years ago and we stayed in Mackinaw City for about a week, but we only did the Island two days and then made trips to other places within driving distance. We went the first week of June and that was still off season so our hotel was only $50 a night. This was the hotel we stayed in http://www.mackinaw-city.com/hotels/clarion/ and I didn't have any complaints. We've also been thinking of going back for our 5 year anniversary this year :)

What other places did you go? I would love to do that, and while Cara is a great baby, I want to make sure she would enjoy it all. We are planning to do a lot of bike riding around the island, and I know she will love that.

We spent one night in Traverse City and went to the Sleeping Bear Dunes before we went to Mackinaw City. In Mackinaw City we went to the Ft. one day, another day we drove up to Ste St. Marie to see the locks, we also went to Munising to see the pictured rocks. We only did the Island two days and I feel like we saw everything that was there and had plenty of time to walk around, ride bikes, etc.

  • We went there for our honeymoon and stayed at the Lilac Tree.  I thought it was very nice.  I know my in-laws go there every year & stay in St. Ignace and they always seem to find a place that's a very good price.  The Lilac Tree was sort of expensive but not as expensive as The Grand Hotel, which I'm pretty sure Ari stayed in.  The Grand Hotel looked awesome - but we just didn't want to spend that kind of money.  We stayed there 4 or 5-days and then took another few days & went down the west coast of Michigan & visited with family & friends on the way back.
