One of our dogs has gotten aggressive- WWYD?

Since I have became pregnant she has gotten aggressive towards me. Although she has always been the most hyper of the two (sisters) I never thought she would bite me or pin me in a corner (growling and barking).  She snaps at me all the time and I am scared to be in the house alone with her.  Our other dog has snapped back at her and gets upset.  I am even scared for when the baby is born because she went after a friends baby a couple of weeks ago that was in the play pen.

We have no idea what to do with her...should we get rid of her or try to see if can work with her????????????

  • Have you taken her to your vet for an exam yet?  Sometimes behavioral changes can be due to medical issues.

If she has checked out fine I think you need to find a behaviorist (your vet should have a couple recommendations) and make an appointment ASAP.  Once they evaluate your dog and give you exercises to work with her on they'll be able to give you and idea on if this is a fixable problem of if re-homing would be for the best.

  • From the behavior you've described, this dog is not rehomeable. So, after she's had a complete work-up at the vet, you could try working with a behaviorist and/or see if anti-anxiety meds help, or I would have her humanely euthanized.
  • She has recently went to the vet for a check up and she is fine. The vet told us that the change is unusual since I was pg before and it did not happen.  When we spoke to a trainer they told us the same thing but wanted 2k for 3 weeks of training and there was no guarantee that she would change her behavior.

What tests did the vet do?

  • I think you need an animal behaviorist more than a trainer.  Unfortunately there are no guarantees and you may spend $ and work with a behaviorist and see no improvement in your dog.

Without any change in her behavior I agree with pp- re-homing isn't an option and you'd have to elect for humane euthanasia.

  • Step up NILIF. She is getting away with too much.

And ditto all of the PPs.

  • I highly recommend extensive blood work if that has not been done. Like pp, I would recommend a behaviorist (not a trainer). Good luck!
