Is there such thing as an isothiazolinone free laundry detergent?

I just found out I have an allergy to it, been dealing with a rash off and on for a year. Unfortunately I cannot find a detergent that doesn't have it in it. Any suggestions? Or any recipes for making my own? Preferably one that does not have soap flakes, I tried shaving soap flakes and it was a PITA.

Re: Is there such thing as an isothiazolinone free laundry detergent?

  • I'm freakishly allergic to isothiazolinone, so I feel your pain. I've had zero reactions to All detergent, the "All Clear" product. My friend also suffers from it, and her derm recommended All Clear as well. If you're sensitive to iso, you'll need to check every label from now on. It's in a bunch of cosmetics, even so-called "sensitive skin" variants. Check all face washes and shampoos too.
  • Ugh isn't it horrible!?!?!?! I can't believe how many products do not have the actual ingredients listed. Either there is no list or on a lot of these "green brands" they say something like "biodegradeable preservative" for an ingredient. Gee, how helpful. It is in a lot of hand soaps as well and from what I can tell all dishsoap. So I switched to a mix of 1/2 castile soap and 1/2 water for washing dishes. I will have to give the All Clear a try. I just made a batch of homemade laundry detergent and am hoping I like it better this time around then I did last time.
  • I don't know what isothiazolinone is, but we wash our clothes in a mixture of basic ivory bar soap (1 bar), washing soda (1 cup), and borax (1/2 cup).  Use about half a tablespoon per load.  It's really easy to make a powdered laundry soap if you own a food processor.  I don't know how you were shaving soap before, but it's not too bad with a box grater either, or you can use a liquid soap (but don't bother to pre-mix the liquid soap with the washing soda--it separates).
  • I've bought these soap flakes before and it's MUCH better than trying to grate a bar.

Also, I had good success with this homemade recipe:

She also makes a cloth diaper detergent that does not use the soap flakes.

  • Put your soap in the microwave until it puffs up -- after it cools, it will crumble easily. No need to grate it! I've done this with Fels Naptha and goat milk soap.

Interesting.  This sounds much easier than using the veggie peeler on a bar of soap! :-)

I recently got this recipe and have decided I am going to make this, but curious if I buy the soap flakes, how much makes a bars worth of soap?
