Recommend your vacuum

I'm in the market for a new vacuum.  Here's what I need...something that's good for wall to wall carpet.  And I wouldn't mind if it also had a hard floor option since most of my downstairs is wood.  I would LOVE something that's easy to use on stairs (I'm thinking a canister?) and I'm looking to stay at or below around $300.  But I'm also willing to splurge if it's totally worth it.

I was researching a bunch on Amazon, saw a few canister that I liked and then it turned out that most of them are mainly for hard floors? Boo!

So let me know what you've got and why you love it!  Please and thank you!

Re: Recommend your vacuum

  • My next vacuum will be an Oreck. My mom and my sister have one and they both think it's the best vacuum they've ever had. Plus, you get a handheld vacuum with the purchase of certain uprights, and you can get a payment plan to deduct a certain amount each month without interest. I'm just waiting for my current vacuum to officially die so I can justify getting a new one :)

  • I have the Kenmore vacuum that Consumer Reports rated high.  It isn't bagless, and at first I thought I wouldn't like that but they have really improved the bags since I last had one with them.  It works great on carpet and the attachments get lots of suction, which I really like since our pups live on our couches.

I think it runs right around 300 but you can get them on sale for close to half that price.

We considered a Dyson but decided against it after reading how much they were to repair and the fact that some carpet mfg will not honor your warranty on your carpet if you have a dyson (although you might google to see if this is accurate).

I would never buy a Bissel again.  I had one break under warranty and there was no service center in my area, so they wanted me to box up the vacuum and ship it to them, told me to take it to Fed Ex to have it boxed up.  When I got there Fed Ex told me it would be 200 to box the darn thing.  The vacuum was less than 100, when I asked Bissel to send me a box they said they didn't do that.  Thanks for nothing.

  • We just sold our Dyson Ball on Craigslist and bought a 2nd Eureka Optima, one for upstairs, one for downstairs.  It's being discontinued so it's hard to find right now, but darn if it's not the best vacuum around and super cheap, too!  Everyone thinks we're nuts for selling the Dyson, nut the Optima picks up so much more dirt from the carpet.
