Re: finding dog friendly hotels

  • I've used dogfriendly.com before

ETA - there are a lot more than just what the list though.  I know for a fact a lot of places in NOLA are dog friendly and they are not on their list.

  • thanks! did you ever have issues with them not excepting large dogs? I know growing up some of the hotels we used didn't accept large dogs. we got away with it because we told them we had poodles. it was their fault they didn't ask what size poodles we had. I don't think I can convince them a hound dog is a small dog.

  • Many Marriotts are dog friendly, especially their Residence Inns. Some Days Inns are as well.

  • When I am looking for lodging when traveling for dog shows, I usually look at those websites but also just look at the websites for the hotels in the areas that I'm going through.  Often they aren't all on those websites.  In general Marriotts do take dogs, also LaQuinta's and Red Roof Inns are a cheaper option that often accept dogs and do not have big pet fees.  Sometimes the pet fees are per stay, so if you are only staying one night at a Marriott, you don't want to pay those big fees.  I've stayed at a lot of chain hotels and many of them didn't ask for the dog size.

My dog doesn't mind stairs or elevators, but if your dog does, then you might want to ask for a ground floor room.

You can also search on sites like expedia with a pet friendly criteria.  I always double check with the hotel's website or call just in case.

  • I used Pets Welcome in December and found a couple of great places through them!  If you're going to be in Savannah, GA, I strongly reccomend the Thunderbird Inn - They love Dogs!!

The Mariott chain usually is good too, although they do charge $75-100 in most cases.

  • thank you very much ladies. we will be going from Dallas to DC and H is thinking we will only make one night stop. H isn't too worried about it, not that I am "worried", but he has never traveled with a dog and I am a planner. so here I am trying to make a plan :)

  • If  you're staying in larger cities, I think all Kimpton hotels (Hotel Monaco, etc) take dogs.  I've also stayed at a number of La Quintas and Holiday Inns that take dogs, but not all those hotels do.  I've had the best luck just picking the city I'm going to stay in overnight and calling the individual hotel directly (or looking it up on their website).

We used petswelcome.com every time. I always check and make sure there isn't a weight limit when I call the hotels to double check. Some do have one. And with 3 dogs over 60lbs, that's important to us!

  • If you use expedia, you can filter your search to include only pet friendly hotels! That's how we get started! Also, some hotels do have weight restrictions, but our 60lb boxer has never had to step on a scale to prove she's not over 50 ;)
