Shoes

I post on other boards but I figure this is the best place for this question. My running shoes are giving me blisters on my arches and I've never had this problem before. I haven't had them very long (since November) but I have been running a lot more lately. Do I just need a new pair or is there something I'm missing.

Re: Shoes

  • That sounds painful - sorry to hear! It could be the shoes, or it could even partially be your socks. If you've increased mileage a lot obviously everything is rubbing on your feet a lot more than normal. So maybe your shoes were okay for a few miles but not okay for double the miles (or however much more.) If your shoes don't feel right I'd try to find a running-specific store to get fitted. Bring in your old shoes so they can look at the wear patterns and see what might be causing the trouble. As for socks, I'd look for some that wicks moisture and maybe even a sock with a bit of cushion. Good luck!

  • I was having the same problem when I would run anything over 3 miles.  I put some body glide on before I go out now and have no problems.
  • Increased mileage always gives me blisters on my arches, new shoes or not.

Things you can try before getting a new pair of shoes:

    - Like PP said, switch up your socks. Are you running in thins, cotton, smartwool, etc? If cotton, ditch immediately and invest in a couple of pairs of thin poly socks. They're expensive, but if you're doing the time in the shoes, aren't your feet worth it?

    - Bodyglide, vaseline, or otherwise lube up your feet to prevent chafing on the socks

    - Moleskin on the spots in your shoes

  • I had nasty blisters in my arches for the longest time.  Turns out I needed wide width shoes for running.

  • Everyone has good suggestions. When I got my new walking shoes (I don't run) fitted at my local running store, I got blisters the first 2 times I wore them. I had to get thicker socks. Back to the running store. That did the trick. Body Glide works great, too.

Also, if you haven't been fitted for shoes at your local running store (not D*cks or Sports R Us), it is worth it.

  • That happened to me once. It drove me crazy! The shoes were just wrong for me. I got some different shoes that worked much better. The other shoes worked great for me for 2 years and I went through several pairs, but somehow they just stopped being right for me. I switched to Brooks and am much happier. Oddly enough, I tried on these same Brooks when I first started running and I hated them. Feet can change. :)
