Does anyone here buy carbon offsets, and if so, where do you buy them? I'd like to start doing this, since I fly way too much (mostly for work). Though obviously I want to buy them from somewhere reputable...
Re: Buying Carbon Offsets
I have on occasion used offsets like for air travel and as a resident in an eco-cottage in college (I'm a grad student and can't afford to offset as much as I would like). We offset the carbon footprint of our wedding from Terrapass last August.
In general you want to look that has third party certification of the REC (renewable energy credits) to make sure they do what they claim they do and met a requirement of "Additionality." The concept of additionality basically means, without your purchase (and other people's purchase) that project would not have been completed for some other reason (i.e. tax credits/rebates or selling credits for a carbon emissions reduction already accounted for in some other way).
I am not up on the details like I used to be but Terrapass, NativeEnergy and CarbonFund are nationally known companies and seem to have a good reputation for at least the last 5 years.
It may be worth looking into local companies if you want to make your impact more personal and sustainable energy on a local scale. This option would probably require more research on your part.
In general, offsets that build infrastructure such as methane capture from landfills or wind turbines are a little more substantive than just planting any old tree. While I am for planting trees or REDD (reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation) projects there are more issues with ensuring the longevity of such a project and you must be more careful.
Cheers,
Annette
