Weight loss cat food

Hi Nesters!

I have put my overweight cat on Science Diet per Vet's recommendation. It hasn't helped at all and I think she may have an allergy to it (small dry scabs are appearing on her back). Shes been on the food for a couple months, maybe three.

Has anyone had success with weight loss in their adult cat?

 Thanks!

 Jen

Re: Weight loss cat food

  • We were told to stop feeding dry food, and that canned is easier to digest & eliminate. Our cat lost weight as soon as we stopped feeding him kibble.
  • Really! I always thought wet food was the fattening kind. Very interesting, thank you.
  • Is there a reason why kitty is on Science Diet, besides the weight loss? It's really not a good food at all. It is full of fillers and by products. I always thought SD and Iams were such good foods until I came here. First, I would try feeding a better food. Check out the green banner at the top of the page for food info and you can also try the site petfoodratings.net. I like that site because it gives a price and quality rating, so you can find something good within your budget. Second, you can start feeding less of the food or stop free feeding (if you currently are doing that). I personally think it is a good idea to feed wet food l, because cats usually don't drink enough water.

I agree, Science Diet is not a good food. "Weight loss" foods in general just add unnecessary fillers. Using set mealtimes with smaller portions is the best way to help your cat lose weight, in addition to making sure they get some exercise through interactive play time.

I feed my cats Evo wet food and Wellness dry food (wellness wet food is also good), and feed less than recommended on the can, because my cats gain if I feed them the recommendation.

  • Thank you for the great info guys. I went on the website that gives ratings and info about all cat food. I found on there that Solid Gold was one of the best, and that is what our puppy is on. Its not expensive and has no fillers, etc. I appreciate the feedback, I had no idea Science Diet was bad, shame on the vet for suggesting it!
