Anyone's cat on prozac?

Our vet recommended it today for our cat.  I think he's stressed!

He started peeing in places he shouldn't be (our dining room rug, my coat that he pulled onto the ground, our bed).  We're also getting ready to move (just sold our house, bought a new one, and started packing) and we have a 2nd baby on the way.  So I think all the anticipated change is freaking him out.

So is your cat on prozac?  Did it help?

Re: Anyone's cat on prozac?

  • My dog is on Prozac for anxiety and panic attacks and it has helped tremendously. It takes 4-6 weeks to full build up in their system and begin working so you'll have to be patient. Have you tried feliway (I think that's the cat one)?
  • *raises hand*

I have two cats on it. It took a couple weeks to kick in, but it's been a lifesaver for us. We had tried literally everything else, and this is the only thing that's worked.

I would second trying Feliway and Rescue Remedy if you haven't already. Feliway comes in a plug-in and a spray, but I've only used the plug-ins. You can find them cheaper on Amazon than in stores.

    Good luck!

  • One of my cats is on my Paxil which is similar to Prozac. We were having lots of problems with intercat aggression and it helped tremendously. As PP said, it takes about 4-6 wks to kick in.
    Me - 34. DH - 39. TTC #1 since 9/2010. IUI #3 2/3/13 + progesterone. BFP on HPT 2/17/13. Beta #1 2/19/13 = 61.9. Beta #2 2/22/13 = 71 Beta #3 77 - C/P
  • There is also a liquid form of Prozac available which may help with actually getting it into your cat.
    Me - 34. DH - 39. TTC #1 since 9/2010. IUI #3 2/3/13 + progesterone. BFP on HPT 2/17/13. Beta #1 2/19/13 = 61.9. Beta #2 2/22/13 = 71 Beta #3 77 - C/P
  • It was suggested for my cat at one point, but as PPs said it takes weeks to kick in. I was pretty sure he was just freaking out about our dog having just been put down, like he thought we gave her away or something, so I decided to wait on it because I was afraid of medicating him if he might improve before it even worked. He ended up coming back to normal on his own in 3-4 weeks. Not saying you should necessarily ignore the vet, but if you think it's the move and packing that stress him, I might wait if it it's happening soon.
