Knife Set

What are the best knives? I am registering for our wedding and am looking for some people with experience. I love to cook and hate dull knives. Thanks so much!

Re: Knife Set

  • I have a wusthof set that I love. They can be pricey but I love them. They are super sharp. I only hand wash them though. They may be able to be put in the dishwasher but I don't.
  • This is a pretty popular question on WC... My answer is always the same, don't by a knife set, buy individual knives that feel good in your hand.

Knives are like wands... the wand chooses the wizard... the knife chooses the cook.

I love my Wustoff chefs knife, but I have Victorinox bread knife and paring knives. I also found that I liked the Classic Wustoff better than some of their other lines. Each knife is waited differently. Henkles, Wustoff, Misono, Global are all good brands, you just need to see which size, shape and weight feels good in your hand.

Knife sets often come with so many knives that are not really needed. I think one or two good chef's knives are important, a bunch of paring knives both serrated and straight, bread knife and maybe a filet knife. Other than that.. you don't really need a lot of other knives.

I'm also not a huge fan of the traditional wooden knife blocks. I would use the magnet strip if I had room in my kitchen. There are other options that work well, and don't require purchasing a knife set.

    Hope that's a bit helpful.

  • I love my wusthoff block.  We got if for a wedding gift and I use every knife in it.

  • I have Wusthof classic. I bought the basic block and then gradually added what I wanted. I love them.

  • Choosing good knives is an intimately personal decision.  Go to a shop with a large selection and test them out.  Hold them in your hand, practice cutting/chopping to see what feels best for you.  My knives are a mix of Shun and Whustof Icon, but what works for me may not work for you.  Good knives are worth the investment, if you take care of them, they should last a very very very long time.
