My dog needs to shed some pounds. What would be the best food for me to feed him?
Re: Weight loss for dogs
What are you feeding him now? If it's a high quality food, just feed him less of it with some low calorie fillers like green beans or pumpkin.
I don't eat diet/reduced calorie food myself, so I wouldn't feed it to my guy.
Wellness CORE Reduce Fat works when mine need to drop a few pounds. Both my dogs have lost ten plus pounds on it.
Reducing food intake wasn't really an option (both are on Acana and don't eat much per day), and would pick around green beans. CORE is a good enough food that I didn't mind using a "diet" food.
As pp mentioned, feeding a little less of a high quality food could help. We helped our girl shed a few pound by switching to a high quality food (of which she felt full after eating less) and getting in the habit of daily jogs (which was really good for both of us).
This is what we did when Dexter gained a few pounds. We still give him green beans as a treat sometimes - if we have them for dinner, I set a few aside for him before I season them. We also did switch his food, too, to another regular food (as opposed to low-fat*), but that had a few percentage points less fat.
We did try a low-fat food at first, before I knew they were not good, but he wouldn't eat it. He knew more than we did. lol.
