Share your favorite way to start seeds indoors?

We were at Lowe's yesterday and I see they have a ton of seeds & starter kits out now. I want to plant some seeds with Nicholas, but the last time I tried to start indoors (years ago), I failed, so I am at a loss for which method to use.

Ideally, I'd like to be able to plant these in my garden, but if that doesn't work out, I'm fine with it. I at least want something to grow so he can see some results.

I saw a little Jiffy kit with a plastic "greenhouse" tray and 10 of the pellets for 2 or 3 bucks. Do these really work well?

What else can you recommend? Should I go for starting my vegetables or just have him do some flowers? Also, when to start?

Thanks :)

  • I plan on starting my transplants next week. I will be starting cherry tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. I already have basil, cilantro, and oregano started.  The rest of my stuff will be directly sown into the ground from mid-april to mid-may.

I buy the cheapy plastic starting containers but you could easily use an old egg carton too. You don't need anything fancy. Make sure to get some good starting dirt.

I keep them on top of my refrigerator until the seedlings emerge (the warmth from the fridge encourages good growth). Once they emerge I move them to a sunny location in the house and let them grow!

Oh, good tip!! :) I was trying to figure out where to put them, as counter space is at a premium in our kitchen.
