Nestie Dr's - what's wrong with my girl?

She's had a runny nose and a little, loose cough most of this week. I've been congested too so I blamed allergies. I've been giving her Benedryl at bedtime - it usually helps.

She acted fine yesterday but last night her cough got pretty bad and she coughed/hacked up a little mucous. She dozed off soon after. I checked on her around 11:30 and she was hot as can be. We gave her ibuprofen and her temp was about 103. About 40 minutes later, she was still moaning and uncomfortable. Her nose completely stuffed. I gave her nose drops which caused her to gag, then to cough, then to throw up. She was a mess and still hot so we put her in a lukewarm bath. She totally perked up and was smiley. Around 4:30 she awoke, hot again and complaining of ear pain. I thought the congestion must've led to fluid in her ears which must've festered into an infection. I give her Tylenol.

Around 8:40 she wakes up in good spirits, only a little warm. No pain in her ears but she said she can't hear because they are stuffed.

Now, here it is 2 hours later. She ate a yogurt, only feels a little warm - has no meds in her and says she has no pain.

What could cause a fever to come and go like that? It can't be over right?

Re: Nestie Dr's - what's wrong with my girl?

  • Not a doctor, but my daughter (3.5) caught a virus or something this week that was like this:

-day one- occasional mild cough- no other symptoms.

-that night- up coughing occasionally but felt Very Hot.  gave ibuprofen.

-day 2- acting totally normal, playing, eating, not much coughing. decided not to call dr. because she was acting normal with no fever.

-night 2- up all night, coughing terribly, hotter than hot, high fever.

-day 3- lethargic, runny nose, fever despite alternating tylenol and ibuprofen every three hours- doctor visit.  Dr. prescribed augmentin.

-after 24 hours on augmentin, she is fever free and only has residual cough (worse at night) and runny nose.

Unfortunately, my sister who was here to babysit her when I needed to go in for an invasive medical test had the cough/fever 36 hours later and I had congestion in my head 24 hours later that has now turned into congested chest.

Whatever it is is a nasty bug and I would try to get her on an antibiotic fast.  I don't normally like antibiotics, but in this case, she totally needed them.

  • scary how similar! thanks for sharing your experience! debating telling my mom about this - she shared a spoonful of frozen yogurt with E yesterday and she'll FLIP on me and definitely get sick - even if it's just in her head.
  • My DD had a cough with fever a few weeks ago.At the 1st visit, they said it was a virus, blah, blah. I went back a couple of days later when the fever wouldnt shae and it was bronchitis. Hope your LO feels better.

  • Chloe had something similar this week. Two nights in a row she just could not sleep; which is uncharacteristic for her.  Crying all night long. I took her to the dr. on Wed. since she had a low grade fever and would freak out when I touched her ear. Turns out she had a perforated ear drum from an undiagnosed ear infection. The pain is usually relieved once the eardrum punctures from the pressure.  She is on antibiotics now and the membrane should regenerate itself.  But something you might want to get checked out.

  • Our little man has had a cough that would not go away & was a total booger-factory for weeks now.  Then he started to run a low-grade fever at 99 so we ended up at the Ped.  The Dr told us on Thursday it was allergies & prescribed a generic Claritin...  I wasn't satisfied so I didn't fill the prescription & when his appetite went away & he started coughing to the point that he was gagging hourly during the night we ended up at the Ped. ER at 4 this morning.  He has some mucous in one lung & has developed (very early stages thank god!) pnemonia.  We are in the market for a new Ped in the Verona area if you like yours!  :oP

The ER told us that coughing (with no sneezing) & yellow snot with a slight fever would be rare symptoms for allergies, but that the claritin might have cleared him up enough for the infection to take a stronger hold before we got a second opinion.  Hopefully your LO doesn't have the same thing the little man does.

  • Bronchitis, croup and phenomena are all going around. My Dd had bronchitis and croup and DS had a terrible case of croup.

If it is a virus normally doctors don't prescribe antibiotics

Yes- that's why I felt the need to respond.  My sis who is a nurse insists it was bronchitis at the very least if not early pneumonia.  The doctor said the cough was caused by post nasal drip.  I doubt that considering my chest is very congested and hurts to cough- and that has never been the case with post nasal drip.

And to be clear (for the responder who said viruses are not treated with antibiotics), she definitely had some kind of infection- and perhaps a virus too.  She had an extremely swollen lymph node behind her ear.
