Why is my cat peeing everywhere?

We've had her about 14 months, she's 18 months old. She's been a great cat and always used her litter box. This past week, for no discernible reason she started peeing everywhere - on our bed, the couches, etc.  We caught her trying to pee on the couches 4 times within an hour this morning.

Here are the only events that I can think are different this past week: I was gone for a few days, but my husband and kids were still there with her, we started her on a different cat food (she had been on a Purina-type one and we got a high quality food instead), we got a beta fish although I don't think she is even aware it's there.

Any ideas?

Re: Why is my cat peeing everywhere?

  • First, I would take her to the vet to rule out a UTI. When S had one, her only symptom was peeing out of the box. If it is not medical, there are tons of tips in the FAQs in the green banner at the top of the board. Also, be sure to clean each accident thoroughly with a cleaner like Nature's Miracle. We have had good luck using Cat Attract litter, as well as Feliway plug-ins and spray. These are mentioned in the FAQs.

  • Great, thanks for the advice! I will definitely check out the FAQs.
  • Get her to the vet asap.  It is probably a UTI and those get bad fast.
