WWH&FD? re: Missing long run with upcoming races...

Today was supposed to be an 11-12 miler. I got 6 into it and just couldn't...didn't want to do it. This has never happened where I was physically capable of finishing but just didn't want to. My heart was not in it. I thought about the next 6 miles and just could. not.

I do have a decent headcold and it was windy....but neither were bad enough to excuse my colossal fail.

Anyhow, next week is a 10 mile race, then I have a scheduled 12 mile run and the weekend after that is a half marathon. I have done a couple 10 milers already so I know I can do that one.

I'm starting to wonder if I should choose one race or the other..? Or should I just chalk today up as a bad run and do both races? Having a bad long run 3 weeks out from a half marathon has me really worried.

Re: WWH&FD? re: Missing long run with upcoming races...

  • I think you'll be fine! For my last half-ironman I never did more than a nine mile run! I also don't think you need to go over 10 miles for a long training run  for a half marathon. I think you'll be more than fine to do both races!
  • I don't understand why you would choose one race or the other? You have to do a long run next weekend anyways, right?

Or do you want to skip the half alltogether?

I think you are over thinking this. It's one bad run. 3 weeks out. Be thankful it's not the week before hand. A head cld & high winds is enough reason for me to skip the run.period.

If you want to run the half, then do it. If you don't, then don't, but one bad run isn't indicative of how your half will go.

  • I had a similar run today. I was scheduled to run 11 but am getting a cold and just didn't have the energy to get it done.  I did 9 instead. I also have a half in 3 weeks. If I were you, I would take it easy this week, do the 10 mile race next weekend, then do about 8 the weekend before the race. I'm going to try to do 11 again next weekend and then taper with 8 the week before the half.
  • Id still do both, but it sounds like you might not want to do both, you definitely can - gbut can and want arent the same, you know? But do them both, youll be fine! Also, i think today might have just been a day for bad long runs. Im balming the wind and the fact that i was sick this week :(

  • the most important run is 2 weeks before the race (1 week before your race is your taper).  so, do the 10 mile race and add 2 miles at the end as a cool down (or add 1 mile at the beginning to warm up + 1 mile at the end to cool down).

it will be good to do a race as a long run, but try to do it at your half race pace as opposed to your 10-mile race pace.

  • Gumi gave excellent advice.  Work the 10miler in to your 12 mile run
