Auto immune mediated anemia

My dog was just diagnosed with this on Saturday. Anyone have any experience with this? She's on prednisone and has to go back in for bloodwork on Friday. There isn't much info on the web about it. I have a lot of questions that I'm going to ask the vet on Monday.

Re: Auto immune mediated anemia

  • My dog Lola has IMHA. She was diagnosed last April. Lo's IMHA was regenerative but it took a while for her numbers to really improve. I'm guessing she was very ill for close to 2/3 weeks. We weren't given a lot of hope. The most important thing is to keep hope though. You have to be your dogs advocate. There was a vet at the Emergency hospital who wanted us to put Lo down. We knew we had to keep fighting for her because she didn't seem ready to give up.

Some of the things I did for Lo was changing her food to limited ingredient, grain free food for her liver to process easily. They reccomend fish for the liver, saying its easiest to process but Lola prefers the duck to the fish. We feed Natural Balance. It is available at PETCO. She did well with vitamins too. I provided Folic acid and Vitamin B to help her generate RBC's. They make a paste supplement for this at PETCO too.

I would also ask the vet about adding azothioprine to the prednisone if that does not seem to help. They may also want you to give Pepcid AC to protect her stomach from the prednisone (can be harsh on the tummy) and baby asprin to prevent the destroyed RBC's from clotting.

IMHA is a battle so be prepare to have some set backs. Every day is a new day though so keep your head up and keep cheering her on to make a recovery.

  • Also here is a link to old posts that may help from when I was going through this with Lo. And if at any point you have more questions I'd be happy to answer them.

  • Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am waiting for a call back from my Vet. We took my dog to the vet on Friday and they did some bloodwork, but I think the diagnoses was a surprise when it came back. She went in for back pain and a seizure (the first one she has ever had).

They called with the results on Saturday and the prescription, but I didn't get a chance to ask any questions because I was unprepared for an Auto Immune diagnoses. Now that I have done some "research" on the internet I have a better idea what to ask.

She did get a shot of prednisone for her back on Friday and she semed much better on Saturday, but is now just laying around and has no desire to get up. She refuses to eat her kibble, so I'm giving her scrambled eggs. I wonder if there is something better to give her...

    thanks!

  • Anything she can eat right now is good for her. I suggest wet food- the stinkier the better.

  • thanks! I might try some of that later. I think I'm sticking with eggs right now. She did eggs just fine, but I gave her rice and ground meat last night and she puked four times already. :(

I talked to the vet and her red blood cell count is a 25. So hopefully they caught it soon enough.
