New vet (who seems to *really* have my back, and/or a burning hatred for the old vet) put her head together with the CSU pathologist who did the necropsy. They are in agreement that although Ernie died with FIP he did not die OF FIP. Although FIP would have eventually killed him at a young age, it did not contribute to his symptoms or death.
New vet is still encouraging me to pursue action with the old vet. I told her I was pretty demoralized and wanted to get this all behind me, and that he was going to die at a young age anyway and she told me "just because you have a fatal disease in hindsight, does not make it ok for someone to prescribe contraindicated XYZ and kill you."
Soooooooo. DH and I have a sit down meeting with old vet Tuesday pm. He told me, "we need to talk and tie up loose ends.."... ummm. I just hope this doesn't get ugly. I have to keep DH's emotions in check. Going into this meeting I think the "magic" number that would make me settle and not pursue it further would be half of all the bills. DH thinks he should pay for all of it.
WWND?
Re: The plot thickens re: Ernie necropsy, WWND
Sounds like if the old vet wants to meet, he knows he did something wrong? Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Id see if he "offers" you anything. He may not. Unless he forgives all of your bills, I'd tell him you need to think about it. That may avoid a fight during the heat of the moment. He has you at a disadvantage because he knows what he's going to offer, you don't. It's only fair that you get time to think about it. Also, I'm much better in writing, I can better organize my thoughts. So you could respond with a letter.
I agree with this.

I agree with this as well.
Katie Talks About...
I also think this is a good tactic.
I *really* think my biggest argument in this is that pfizer has 2 contraindications for use of that antiparasitic-
#1 they need to be older than 8 weeks
#2, in LARGER font and in bold on the back of the box AND in the package insert: DO NOT GIVE TO SICK CATS. My argument is, he had a URI that had been treated with 4 different antibiotics, including a potent liver metabolized antibiotic that can potentiate the effect of other liver metabolized drugs (which is the anti-parasitic). If he argues, well your cat had FIP, he was doomed.... OH, so you're telling me he was a REALLY FRICKING SICK CAT, ie the main contraindication.
now I'm getting fired up.... I think you guys and DH are right, I should go in strong and not just weenie out. I think taking time to think about things will be a good idea post meeting.

I agree with this. I also think you shouldn't agree to anything in the meeting. No matter what is said or offered to you, you should say that you have to discuss it with your attorney prior to making any kind of agreement.
Ditto.
