Looking for advice on shipping cookies to a soldier
Hi ladies - I'm obviously not a poster here, but someone from my local board suggested I ask on this board. I am looking to ship some cookies to my brother overseas, but want to know the best way to do it so they remain fresh and intact. Someone had mentioned melting being a problem, is that so? Sould I put them in tupperware? Maybe vacuum seal them in small batches? Any tips or advice? Thanks a bunch!
Re: Looking for advice on shipping cookies to a soldier
Ok, I swear I am not stalking you. lol. I just happen to also be on your local board as well.
This is the food saver I got: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002NGNBPA/ref=oh_o05_s00_i00_details. I get extra bags at Walmart. By the time you vacuum seal the bags, they are hard as bricks so breakage isn't a huge issue. I vacuum sealed them in the gallon sized bags and it was fine.
I clicked on the wron board by mistake BUT I have sent cookies to my BIL while he was overseas.
I put them in a Pringles can that I washed out. First wrapped in wax paper and ten added a piece of bread on the bottom for freshness. They didn't break, and he said they were always fresh.
We've done this quite a few times! Popcorn also sends well in it too!
I would definitely recommend individually wrapping cookies or brownies. I've had some done the individual food-saver method, and they worked really well. I've also had some that were wrapped individually in saran wrap, then the whole thing sealed with a food saver or put into glad ware.
Cookies DO melt sometimes, and usually just end up getting stuck together into one big mass that can't be separated. I think this normally happens if they are sealed into the food-saver bags without anything separating the layers, and before they are completely cooled. But in the summer, sometimes boxes of mail get left out on hot airport tarmacs until they can be moved, so chocolate WILL melt in the summer. This is why I suggest individual packaging. Also, it's easier to share, and keeps them from going stale once opened. Pest control is a big issue over there, and you're not supposed to keep food out and "open" so glad ware or a zip-lock bag are essential.
