Obedience training?

Ok, starting next month (or when the next class starts) I want to put one of the doxie boys into training. I wish I could do both at one time but I know that won't work and my husband is off a set day every week. So, which should I start with? Cocoa, who is very shy but is coming out of his shell slowly or Dapper, who is a big nut and licks you all over when you get on the floor with him. They both are nervous on a leash but if I have a helper with them, the walk goes much smoother. Cocoa already basically heals when you walk cause he's nervous when you walk around him so he walks on my left and behind me. Dapper is all over the place! LOL I do plan on putting both in training but since I have to do it one at a time I just want to see who I should do first.

Re: Obedience training?

  • That's a tough one. I would wait another week or two & see how Cocoa develops. Then I would weigh who's behaviors need the most outside assistance.

  • Yea, I ended up calling Petsmart because I wanted to get prices and asked them too. They said they'd recommend Dapper first since he's crazy and let Cocoa come out of his shell more. Cocoa is so calm and walks nicely on a leash but just gets scared. We won't be starting classes until at least March 9 anyway.
  • the classes are really more about training YOU to handle your dog so taking the dog who needs it the most is best then you should be able to use the methods you learn at home to work with your other dog.  Good luck!

  • I'd go with Cocoa.   The class (assuming its a positive reinforcement class) will help build his confidence and his bond to you.  It might help you deal with Dapper much easier at home as well.

Either way, there is probably no wrong answer to this one.
  • Personally, I would call around for some other options for classes.  In my area, you can get classes at kennel clubs, training clubs, and private centers that you would be able to have classes on different nights of the week.  I take different classes on different nights of the week with my dog so I know I might be crazy but this is how I would deal with it.
