Hello, H and I will be flying into Schipol Airport for the first portion of our four city trip in Europe. We'll be bringing 'unlocked' cell phones with us and plan on purchasing pre-paid minute SIM cards upon our arrival. I have two questions regarding this:
1. Are pre-paid SIM cards easy to find? Are they available somewhere at Schipol or are we better off looking for a store/vendor/market in Amsterdam?
2. Can a SIM card purchase in Amsterdam be used to make phone calls to any of Eastern Europe and the UK? Or is there a particular type of SIM card that would allow this? (We need to get a hold of friends and family in Glasglow and London Area while we're in Eastern Europe).
TIA
Re: SIM card questions for Europe
Thanks, we're borrowing unlocked Cingular phones from a co-worker. I know the phones have been used with prepaid SIM cards in other countries, like Saudi Arabia, so I'll have to check that they're compatible with Europe. I guess I need to do some googling.
PP with Verizon. Thanks, I'll look into the cost of that. I was hoping that using phones we can access for free with the SIM cards would be relatively cheap. However, if they're not compatible, I think I may skip the whole idea together since we will be traveling with an ipad and can email with free WIFI instead.

Do you know if the phones are Tri-Band or Quad Band? Tri-bands might not work in Eastern Europe but a quad band will definitely work all over europe.
You should be able to get a pre-paid sim card at the airport. I cant remember if they have the SIM card vending machines at Schipol; its been ages since I've been there and I wasnt planning on using my phone that much so I just paid the international charges.
You should be able to call whatever number you want but it might be charged at a higher rate.
Hop over to the International Nestie board and see if the ladies over there can you more info.
I will say that I had no issues using my cell phone (with my US sim card) to make a call to Hawaii from Zagreb, Croatia. Worked just fine
Pay as you go or pre-paid SIM cards should be available in any convenience store, grocery store or (Europe's pathetic excuse for) Target-type stores.
I'd be concerned about being able to load it in a different language, so I'd save that part until you got to your hotel and have the staff help you.
