QOTD: Monday

Do you use a GPS for navigation? If so, how much do you rely on it? If it lost signal, would you be able to rely on an internal map and compass?

Re: QOTD: Monday

  • I do, I have a Magellan (nickname - Madge). I have a pretty good sense of direction, so I typically only use it for two reasons:

    - I'm in a completely new place (traveling for work, etc.) and need it to get around

    - I'm going on a long trip and want to try to beat its ETA Devil

  • We have one that we share between us. It mostly stays in DH's truck (it was a gift to him, so technically, it's his), I will take it if I'm going somewhere unfamiliar. We use it on road trips in whichever vehicle we're taking.

I used to have a pretty good sense of direction, but I seem to have lost it somewhat. You'd think all these years of moving to a new town every 2-3 years would have improved it, but it's made me more nervous about finding my way.

I am, however, pretty good with a map - my mom taught us that skill young - we'd "help" her navigate on road trips to see our family.

  • I like to have a general sense of where I'm going first (based on my internal map or a check of Google maps before Ieave), but I do use my car's GPS to get to places.  I tend to turn it on near the end of the trip so I don't have it talking over my audiobook for 20 minutes about not taking every Beltway exit or re-routing me off of 66 for the part of the drive I know.

I'm pretty good with directions for most places I go.  I used to drive around aimlessly when I first moved here to get a sense of what is where.  But if I'm driving up to Silver Spring for the first time in 3 years, you'd better bet that I need a little GPS guidance :)

  • We have a Garmin that we don't really use anymore.  We stopped using it when we got smartphones.  We use the google maps/navigation on our phones now.

I have gotten really bad at finding my way since the birth of gps systems.  I used to have a pretty amazing sense of direction - but now I basically rely on gps to get me anywhere.  It's kind of sad.

I can read a map though!

  • Yes. I tend to stress out when I drive anywhere remotely unfamiliar. For example, I was meeting someone and though I knew the city quite well, I used GPS to tell me exactly where to turn into the restaurant. (I have a knack for passing places.) I also use it as my address book... if going to a friend's house and I've only been there once or twice, I use it to tell me exactly which house, which turn, etc. But since it's usually in hubby's car, I have to plan ahead to use it. When 66 shuts down or something, of course I know alternate routes to get home, but I still use a map to find top-secret side streets to bypass everyone else's alternate routes.

On our Garmin we did.  The American English lady was so bitchy!  The British lady is very nice about stuff when she has to recalculate.

  • I rely on my iPhone GPS more than I'd like to admit.  Having lived in the DC area for almost 6 years, you'd think I have a good idea of the layout of the city, but no.  Part of the problem is that I usually Metro, so I don't have to know how to get to a lot of places.  But when I do need to drive there, I rely on GPS completely.  If it suddenly didn't work, I could probably read a map.

Ours has an Australian accent.  Big Smile

But, yes, I use my GPS.  I wouldn't say I use it a lot, but with beltway construction being what it is, I use it fairly frequently to circumvent the mess using the "alternate route" feature.

  • we have a Garmin for when we take longer trips. I like it because it will point us in the direction of food/gas/shopping. Otherwise, we are both pretty good with local directions. If I need an alternative route, I use my iphone.

  • I'm fine with local directions in VA and DC, but need assistance in MD. My Garmin broke and it was cheaper to buy a new Tom-Tom (half off at Target) than to fix the other, so ... now I need to learn how to use it and I'm golden, even in MD. I don't have a smartphone (dinosaur flip phoner here) so I don't have that as an option. I love to read maps, though - and if we're taking a long car drive, I will still go to AAA and get a TripTik. I love flipping the pages as the miles go by!

  • We have an actual GPS device (Tom Tom), but I don't think we've used it in over a year. Now we both use GPS apps on our phones. I use it pretty frequently when I'm driving to a new place. Sometimes I still go to google maps and print out directions, because my phone loses its GPS signal way too frequently (which is odd, because it otherwise does not drop signals).

  • If I don't know where I am going, I use DH's car, which has satnav.  If we are together and in my car, we can use his phone, which has a better app than mine.

On the whole, I know where I am going if it is in the immediate area.

  • We have a GPS and use it frequently when we are going somewhere unfamiliar or on a long trip.

I like to think that I would be able to rely on an internal map and compass, but this is not actually true at all. My good friend always tells me he's never seen anyone more confident they know where they are going, and in actuality be totally wrong. I'd end up hopelessly lost and actually relying on the kindness of strangers to lead me in the right direction.

  • I have a horrible sense of direction. I get lost in malls. We have a Garmin that we use on long trips, but I back it up by scoping out the route on my Smartphone's "maps" app. The Garmin has driven us into Lake Scranton (an "Office" reference) too many times, so to speak.

For shorter trips I use the phone. Love it! I love that I don't have to print out directions from Google Maps anymore.

  • Rarely. My dad got us one for Christmas, and I also have the map thing on my phone. We have used it (especially for finding our way out of traffic/food nearby) when traveling). But honestly, I love the atlas, and prefer using that.

Most of the time I plan my route on google maps before I leave. I do not like finding my way without a game plan.

Oh but regarding internal map and compass--h*ll no. I consistently choose the wrong option given the "which way do we go--right or left?" situation.

  • This question was inspired by a recent disagreement I had with my GPS when it fizzled when I had no backup plan. I've only used the GPS in my smartphone for a year - before that I roamed the streets of the DMV with Google map printouts and a sense of adventure. I like to think that I can get myself out of a jam - getting lost all those times must count for something, right? - but I learned to always review my route in advance.

  • I have a Tom Tom, but I have no idea where it is. We use Google Maps on our iphones now for the most part.

I grew up in the area, so I rarely need help in Montgomery County (other than the neighborhood streets), but when I cross the river to Virginia, which I do frequently for work, I definitely need help.

  • We have one and I rely on it mostly for traffic.  I could get around easily without it, well fairly easily.  I've always been pretty good with directions.

  • I have Google Maps on my iPhone - does that count?  I never use it though; on the rare occasion that I am driving someplace and don't know where I am going, I just pull up the directions in advance from Google.

  • I always print out directions in addition to the GPS. My phone is a GPS, it's a Garminfone.

as for maps, I am excellent at reading maps. As long as they are accurate, I can use them to get myself anywhere in the world :)

  • We have a portable Garmin but now that I have an iphone we use that most of the time because then I don't have to worry about finding a place to hide it in my car (or lug it around). I wish my iphone would talk though so I didn't have to look at it all the time.

I do have a pretty decent sense of direction, but if I am going somewhere new I definitely like the crutch of a GPS.

Side note: we have built in GPS in our Highlander and it suuuuuucks. Garmin really needs to take over Toyota's mapping software.

  • Funnily, I can answer that I desperately need my GPS for navigation now - yesterday I offered to drive my cousin-in-law back to his house after he had helped us move some furniture from his parents' place to ours. I forgot my GPS and my phone in the rental truck and just took my car to take cousin home.  I got there just fine, but, noting that I had JUST driven there and driven back from there in the rental truck, I still managed to get hopelessly lost on the way home.  Kicking myself the entire time for forgetting the gps.  So, no, evidently, I can not rely on any kind of internal map or compass.  (The primary reason I got lost - I took the beltway in the wrong direction and got off when I realized it but couldn't find my way back on as I had landed myself somewhere in downtown DC.)
  • Yes, I have a GPS in my car and honestly I have it on quite a bit.  The map is always on since it'll turn on with the car but I don't always do the voice nav unless it's a new place I'm going and I need turn by turn directions.

I can't read a map to save my life so I'd be screwed.  The first time I moved out here before I had the new car I tried to get home from the grocery store (which was literally 5 blocks away), I took a wrong turn and ended up in DC - I had to call DH crying because I was lost.

  • We have one that DH and I both use. We only use it if we're going to unfamiliar places or on long trips. If either of us were commuting into DC we would probably use it for the traffic feature. If it lost signal, I would have a terrible time finding wherever I was going. My internal map/compass is not good.

  • No, because we don't own a car. We consult paper maps or Google for directions.
