How does it work? My co. is closing
and we are being offered packages. If I take the package for let's say 2 months. After the second month, can I apply for u/e if I don't have a job by then or can I do it right away? I am just trying to understand this all. Thanks!
Re: Unemployment Question
Sorry to hear that.
Unless your company says otherwise, I believe you should be O.K. applying on the first day that you're not working. The last time I did it, my last day was on a Friday and I was able to apply online on Saturday.
And there was information on the UE application form that asked if your last job still owed you any back pay, holiday pay, or severance package money. So you can fill out the info on there and then that should tell you what else you need to do.
You can always call them and ask, but there's always a long wait time on the phone. So if you have a while during the workday and can put them on speakerphone while you do some other stuff, try that.
Do you have an HR person? (S)he should be able to give you some more information. If the whole company is closing, maybe they will have an HR briefing to tell everyone what their options are (and if not maybe you can suggest it?).
Thanks! We just got the official word today so I am just trying to figure this all out before the deadline.
