moving to Sarasota from NY - need recommendations!!

Hi,

In a few weeks we (me, DH, our 10 month old and our black lab) will be moving from our hometown in NY to Sarasota (for DH's job).  I am overwhelmed with starting anew, especially since we're leaving all our friends and family behind.

I would appreciate any recommendations you may have for important things like:

-pediatrician

-midwife/ob/gyn

-doggy daycare (we've never boarded our pup, but flying back and forth to NY to visit family is going to require it.  boo)

-dentist

- any good groups for me and my son (I'm a SAHM)

Anything else you can think of that will be helpful would be SO appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Welcome! I can't help with anything, as I'm in Spring Hill but I'm sure someone will chime in! The girls here are awesome!
  • Welcome to FL! I don't have any advice, as I don't live in Sarasota, but I'm sure Tasha will chime in with some fabulous advice. Hope your adjustment goes smoothly.

  • I lived in Sarasota for three years and I LOVE it there.  Absolutely LOVE it there.  I'm in Tampa now, but I haven't found a doctor here that matches the doctor I had there.

     Cathering O'Connell (941)954-1123

Why I love her is because she is an MD, but practices integrative medicine.  So she doesn't jump the gun to give you Rxs, though she will and can, but she takes her time with you to examine the big picture. Everytime I complain about the crappy doctors I go to here, my H is just like, "drive 1 hour and go see Dr. O'Connell."

For a vet, I used Bay Road Animal Hospital http://www.bayroadanimalhospital.com/doctors-staff/

I went to Dr. Rosenberry.  I liked her because she was in the Peace Corps and so were my H and I.  She was also great with my dog, who had to get heartworm treatment and some minor surgery there.  (My dog came home with me from Thailand.  There was no medical treatment or Rx for heartworm for her there.)

  • Hi! I can totally understand why you are overwhelmed, but Sarasota is a really great place to live in my opinion.

I use Paradise Pediatrics (Dr. Southerland) and LOVE them beyond words.

For ob/gyn, I used First Physicians for ob for both of my kids, but I agree with everything Moonstone said about the awesomeness of Dr. Catherine O'Connell for a family practitioner (I always used her for gyn as well). She is wonderful!

I can't help you with doggy daycare since we've never boarded our dog, but I really like Fruitville Animal Clinic for a vet. And no help with dentist, because I'm on the search myself.

There aren't many regular posters on this board from Sarasota besides myself (and another very busy mom who hasn't been on much lately) but feel free to ask any questions you might have. Good luck with your move!

  • Thank you SO much ladies.  I am definitely writing all your suggestions down (so great to hear of a doctor people absolutely love) and will no doubt be on this board with some regularity as I try to acclimate myself to the area.

Thank you again for taking the time to offer your suggestions.

    I'll be back!!

  • I live in Tampa but I just wanted to say welcome.  I have family in Sarasota and I go down there frequently.  You will love the beaches there like Siesta Key - most beautiful sand ever!  Also check out St. Armands Circle for cute restaurants, perfect for a date night.  And there are some good shopping areas right off I75 and University, with a great Target and some other shops.  They just built a bunch of new stuff over there.
