Would you pull your kid from school for vacation?
I really want to go to Disney next year. I didn't think DH was on board..but turns out he is. We are considering April/May or October. If we do October we'd have to pull Sabrina out of kindergarten for a few days. I'm thinking at this stage its not that big of a deal right?
Re: Would you pull your kid from school for vacation?
As a teacher it drives me crazy when parents do this. They ask for work, it never gets done. Some work can be made up other stuff can't.
As parent I get at young age, to go on vacation during the off season to places. It's cheaper and less crowded.
Mh and I have this discussion all the time.
i think in kindergarten it's NBD, since kids aren't even required to go anyway. it's the grade school ages that i have more of an issue with. that said, my parents did it yearly and i turned out ok.
We did it when I was younger.
Sh@t happens. You can't please everyone, and it's your life. And FWIW, my mom was a 4th grade teacher for 30 years and we still did it. LOL!
I dont know what we will do for our own family but if an opportunity arises and it happens to fall during school, I won't say never.
One of the biggest nest debates - love it! LOL.
Yes, we talked about it even before having kids (together) and neither of us see a huge problem with it... my parents have taken us out for vacation, and we'll take our kids out. Not to say we'll pull them out for a 2-week European cruise - but we'll do it.

i am pulling belle out for a week next year in kindergarden to go to disney in march. and i am sure we will do it with cole. i am NOT a fan of going in the hotter months. so we are going to go for her birthday next year.
i know a few other nesties have done it.
I would. My parents did it often. My sister's actually doing it as we speak
"Like" me on Facebook
Yes I would... depending on lots of factors. How my kids are doing in school, if there is anything important going on around that time, if there's a reason why we can't go during the summer or a break, how long the trip is for etc...
Definitely. As a kid, we were taken out of school to go on vacations 2 times a year usually. When my dad was able to go away, that's when we were able to go. We were all (3 of us) straight A students, so i think that also played a big part. If my kids don't try in school, and aren't good students, I might re-think that. But kindergarten would be fine with me.
If it was more than one week, I would try to plan it so that one week is on break, and the other is the week before or after...
I had no idea this was a big deal on TN.
For a number of years my mom took me out of school to go to Disney around Halloween. Cheaper, easier for her, better weather, etc.
I always did my homework when we were away. This was something we did off and on from the time I was in elementary school all the way to high school.
Whether or not someone else's kid is pulled out doesn't matter to me. Your kids your business. And I'm not a teacher but I understand it's inconsiderate to the teacher.
My parents instilled that we don't miss school - short of being seriously ill, we went to school. Honestly, we didn't take family vacations so whether or not we'd be out for a vacation was moot.
I don't think I'll be quite that strict w/ my kid. I think as much as we can we'll try to avoid taking A out of school for travel but there will be times when we probably will. I hope to reserve it for when he's younger and it won't have as much academic impact. We have to coordinate vacation time between our jobs and whatever else is going on with A at school - there will be many weeks that get crossed off the calendar right off the bat that we won't let him miss. I don't think it's realistic to say these 2 holiday weeks are the only time we will ever travel since it has always been important to us as a family to explore and see the world. I do hope that we will be able to enforce that school work gets done, even while we're traveling, and that missing school is generally an exception, not a rule.
My parents did it & I'm okay
I think I would,,,, not for months or for weeks... I think the experiences would be worth it
I think it depends on the situation. Most of the time, I am against pulling my children out for vacation beyond a day or two. The standard public school calendar is set a year in advance giving families adequate time to plan accordingly.
My husband cant hold his vacation schedule to a school calendar so if he can go....that is when we go. I am not going to disney in the summer so if we go we will take off from school to go. Other places too, if the opportunity comes up. If my kids are able to miss school and not fall behind them I am fine with it.
I can see not wanting to do it, but I dont see why this would be such a hotly debated topic.
For a trip to Disney, not likely. For a trip to see a lived one that might not be there the next school vacation or a deploying parent, etc yes.
Do you know in some places this is such an issue that you get reported to the authorities if your kid misses too many days for an "unexcused" absence. And apparently seeing a deploying parent off isn't excused. I have friends that have gotten warnin letters in CA after taking their kid out to spend a day with dad before he deploys to Afghanistan for months. Really frustrating.
I'm pulling Molly from k next March for Disney.
I agree with other posters as long as they are good students, we might continue to do so, not for Disney but for other trips.
Aaah, this debate again! LOL!
Yes, I would pull my kids out of school and we even did it in November (and B is in K).
i don't think its that big of a deal in kindergarten.... and for the older grades, it would depend on how my kid was doing in school, whether they would be able to catch up easily once they got back.
FWIW.... you could look at going the second week of november. schools have off a thursday and friday for the NJ teacher's convention. so you could go for a whole week, but she'd only miss 3 days of school. This is when we always used to go when i was school, and it was great- not too crowded down there, good weather....
