s/o big kid beds

We are going to be moving DS to a big boy bed and a new room this spring. Right now he is perfectly content to sleep in his crib, but seems excited when we talk about his new room (we have to move our office/sewing room out of it and paint it, so it probably doesn't seem very real to him yet).

What size of bed and type of furniture did you get for your toddler / big kid? We are on the fence about whether we should go for furniture that will get him through high school (at least the bed and a nightstand/small bookcase) or go with something basic for the interim (we also understand that it may be best to start with the mattress on the floor either way). Also after looking at furniture last weekend, we're more split than we initially thought on twin vs. full size bed, again thinking about the longevity thing, because he will likely be a tall kid and reading books to him would be much easier in a full bed.

Re: s/o big kid beds

  • We've done twin beds for both and that has worked well.  DS's bed will likely have to be changed out at some point as it is more a kid bed.

  • Right now G is in a toddler bed set up. She's getting to big for it so we will be getting her a twin this summer. If we have a #2 once they are too big for the toddler bed they will get her twin bed and she will get a full. We keep debating moving her straight into a full because we have a fairly new mattress set in our guest room but for us it would take up a lot of space in her room.

  • We got a twin and the matress is on the floor right now next to the box spring. I figure it is probably good to replace a matress what every 10 years so as she gets older we can upgrade to a bigger size if need be, but it works great for now.
  • If you have the space I would go for the longer-term furniture. We only went with a toddler bed because we are planning the kids will share a room and this will give them a lot more space for a while. Also DD is petite so she will probably fit in a toddler bed for quite a while.
  • We went with a twin, partly because his room isn't huge and a twin leaves more room to play.  My mom suggested going with a twin because there's SO much room on a full/queen for a little kid that she thought he might feel more comfy/secure on a smaller better.  It kind of makes sense, but I don't really know if there's any merit to that or not.

  • We went with a twin and bought a whole furniture set (bed, dresser, nightstand) that we plan to last her through high school.

  • we bought a fairly inexpensive twin bed with a bookcase headboard and 3 drawers under the mattress.  we bought it 3 yrs ago and it's great and will last him a while.  the dresser was expensive solid oak that should last him a lifetime (as long as he doesn't carve it up or sharpie it...)

  • We found a great deal on a loft/bunk bed set with dresser on Craigslist.  We've had it in a single with rails and now it's a bunk bed which is great for sleepovers.  She sleeps on the lower bunk which is on the lowest setting.  I'm sure when she's older she'll like the loft version and we can put a larger desk underneath it.  I'm all for furniture they can grow into, but wouldn't feel bad if we did something else since we got such a great deal on it.

  • I think it depends on the size of the room. We decided a full would just take up too much space in DD1's room, so we went with a twin.

We'll move DD2 into a twin sometime soon as well.

  • DS's room isn't very big so we went with a twin.  We only moved him out of the crib recently (it went surprisingly smooth) and it's still just a mattress on the floor. We're looking for an inexpensive frame/head board that  hopefully adds a bit of storage.  We bought his dresser at the same time as his crib and it will last.
