Outdoor games for little kids

Hey all,

We still have a little bit of time but I just thought I'd dig around and get some ideas for outdoor games for young kids.  SD's birthday is in the summer & we always have an outdoor party in the backyard.  Now that the extended family is expanding and we've become friends with more neighbors we'll be having more young kids from now on & I'm trying to get some game ideas on what will keep them occupied.  We already have a bean bag toss and NDN's have a pool (which we always have to play by ear with the weather).  We also have badminton but the older nephews/nieces usually take over that.

Any other ideas?  TIA!

  • What age ranges?  Sidewalk chalk and bubbles are favorites in my 3 yo's mind.  A cheap swimming pool with balls, bocce, a basketball hoop...
  • Ages 4-11 girls and boys.  The basketball hoop might be a good call; in fact our neighbors across the street may have one.  Thanks!

The NDN's pool came in handy last year for the kids, just being in MI we never know what the weather is going to do.  It seems every year we get rain for her party!  :-/

  • Having a pool for a party always worries me, especially when the youngest kids are 4. I'm terrified of drownings.

scavenger hunt, freeze dance (play music, everyone dances then freeze when it stops), water balloon toss, balloon volleyball, face painting, have an older teen be a "fortune teller" and set up a little booth, three legged race, various relays (carry an egg on a spoon, fill up a bucket with water using only small containers, walk backwards, hop to the end, etc), hula hoop contest, face painting (incl. painting each others faces), jump ropes. Most of these can be moved indoor if weather becomes a problem.

All good ideas as well, thank you!  :)

As for the pool parties, yes we definitely need at least one adult over there at all times to make sure the kids are ok.  My step daughter is 13 and she & her BFF were in the pool with the younger ones last year; but in addition my friend whose kids were there went over and sat with them while they swam just to make sure they were ok.  Pool is fairly small and not too deep, just in case anything happened to where one of the adults would've had to jump in.

Thank you both for the ideas.  I'll keep some of this stuff in mind and start planning for it in the next couple months.  :)

  • Our nephew had a survivor type themed birthday party for his 9th birthday and the kids had a blast. Here are some of the games they played:

    1. Egg carrying contest: each contestant gets a spoon and an egg. The smaller kids have a shorter length to travel but whomever makes it accross the finish line without dropping their egg wins.

    2. Obstacle course where they had to go around trees, I don't really remember the obstacle course.

    3. Eating contest: this is kinda gross and the smaller kids did not particpate but they opened a can of wet dog food and said whomever ate the most of it won. It was spam not dog food.

    4. Bean bag toss for the smaller kids, a rock toss contest for the older kids.

The cake was a large sheet cake with a firepit made with pretzels and rollos it was really cute. Our nephew loved it.

Playing outdoor games is really important for the benefit of small children. Earlier, people only knew cricket badminton, hockey etc as outdoor games. But, wide varieties of outdoor games have emerged in recent years such as bubbles, bungee, snow skiing, rock climbing etc. People believe that these games require good physique as well as strong determination as well, but there?s nothing like that, anyone can go for these games.
