Anyone want to dx a rash?
DS has a rash. You can barely see it. Tiny, tiny little bumps over his entire body. It's not red but it is raised. Feels almost like dry skin. It definitely seems to itch. Any ideas?

Re: Anyone want to dx a rash?
Could be simply dry skin! If it's not red or inflamed around it, I wouldn't call it Eczema or a viral rash. I'd start with a good moisturizer (almond oil, coconut oil, or olive oil are awesome) 1-2 times/day for 2-3 days and see how it looks after that. I would say clogged hair folicles (simply needing some exfoliation) but, since it seems itchy, it's probably not that.
I'm not a professional, I've just suffered from pretty much every skin condition that is diagnosable since I was born ; )
I love derm. My classmates think I'm weird. I'm the only one out of 42 who is considering working in derm.
Top on my differential would be a viral exanthem. Has he been sick lately?
Post a pic!

I'll post a pic later. He has had a runny nose, but really, this time of year he always has a runny nose, LOL

Here are the pics. We're hoping it's a contact type reaction to either new lotion or a switch we made to dryer sheets? I talked to a nurse this morning and they didn't seem to think it was serious. Suggested oatmeal baths and benadryl. The really red skin at the top is from scratching. He's broken the skin a few places
And this is new this evening. Big red blotch on his neck. Could be from scratching?

The big red blotch is from scratching... Once your skin gets revved up, it does that easily.
Is it on his little butt cheeks/diaper area? If it's a contact thing, I either wouldn't expect it to be there or to be WORSE there (dryer sheets/lotion). Those places have constant contact with clothing and don't "breathe" well after getting lubed up with lotion. If it's viral, I would expect it to be there and look like it does everywhere else. If there is any part of him not rashy, you could be evil and put a big blob (like dime sized) there and see what happens. In adults, we put plastic wrap over it and tape it on over night to see what happens.
Definitely NOT dry skin/eczema.
I can't tell too well in the pictures... but some of those definitely look red, mean, and allergic! But that might just be from scratching.

I just had the chance to look at the pics and that is NOT just dry skin. You did the right thing by skipping the lotion and putting him in a shirt that wasn't recently washed. It really looks like a reaction to something to me. There's obvious inflammation which wouldn't happen from dry skin alone. Poor kid! For my crazy sensitive skin, I have to use special detergents (soap nuts, mainly) and no lotions (I use coconut oil, mostly) ever. No fabric softener, no perfumes or dyes, and I try to only wear cotton or cotton blend fabrics.
