Blog Question: Unusually High Traffic from StumbleUpon?

Hi everyone. I know many of you ladies have well-established blogs. I was hoping you could help me with a question. 

I started my blog about a little over a month ago and I was checking Google Analytics and had a very high spike in visit today (as in, double my previous highest day total). I checked and virtually all of this new referral traffic is coming from StumbleUpon. Most visits are from "refer.php" - does this mean that someone referred my page to other StumbleUpon members? I'm very new to all of this, so I was excited to see the jump. Should I be doing more with StumbleUpon? I've never really considered it a worthwhile measure to increase traffic, but obviously, that was a mistake!

congrats! stumble spikes are always fun.

I don't really think YOU need to be doing anything more with stumbleupon- the reason you got the spike is because other people "liked" your content.

Thanks for your reply! I had gotten a couple visits here and there from StumbleUpon, but this was so completely random and large that I didn't know if my page was shared in some other way. I only have a very basic understanding of the site! Thanks again.

They probably thought your mockingjay cookies are super-awesome!  It's a really great picture (the one in your siggy....)  You should make them pinnable... I bet you'd get a lot of traffic through pinterest, too!

Awww...thanks so much! All of the referral traffic actually went to my tutorial for monocle cupcake cookies (http://notyourmommascookie.com/2012/02/elementary-my-dear-cupcake/)  - I would have thought the HG cookies would be more popular too...I guess someone really like monocles

I've been thinking of adding a "pin it" button to my posts...and this has convinced me to do it!  Thank you again for your kind comments

I have seriously given up on trying to figure out what people are going to like. My most popular post have been ones that I have luke warm feelings about and then they get pined 3000 times in one day! And of course, I'm super thrilled about it, but I also have the posts that I LOVE and am super proud of an not one seems to notice them! You just never know what people are going to go crazy for!

Congrats I bet your picture got pinned and you will see a huge surge from that in the next few days! Great pic

This might sound silly but this is "mustache month". I know of several people that are having mustache parties this month. So the cookies might be of interest to those people.

Some days are regular traffic and then others my blog will go crazy from a particular site. I have a couple of recipes that every couple of weeks goes nuts on Pinnterest , again, they just seem to rekindle and that's ok with me

I think of it like going viral in miniature.  Both SU and Pinterest allow people to recommend your page and it can stop there or it might snowball.  Congrats for getting a snowball!

Yep, same here. No rhyme or reason. People just like what they like I guess
