Any suggestions for a kennel for travel?

We have a mini schnauzer who is approx 16 pounds;  18 inches high, 24 inches from nose to tail.  We are looking for a kennel that we can take with us when we travel.

Hoping for a light, compact one, we purchased this:  http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11193169&lmdn=Crate+Style soft sided kennel.  We used it for 2 weeks in place of his other kennel in the house so that he was used to it.  Then we went away for the weekend and the first time that we put him in it while leaving the cabin, he broke out.  Actually pushed the zipper apart and roamed the cabin while we were gone.  He ended up being find the main room of the cabin from then on when we left.

The issue is that we motorcycle camp on the weekends all summer long.  So we need a kennel or way of locking him up near our tent when we go to dinner with our group.  Others in the group have the plastic kennels, but they also have dogs that are about 10 pounds so the kennel is easy to carry.

Is there anything other than the metal, foldable crate?

  • You could try zip tying or using a small lock to secure the zipper; however, I would be hesitant in general to leave a dog in a kennel alone in nature (plastic or soft). Do you leave him in the tent in his kennel?

You could also consider boarding the dog for the weekend (unless you're specifically bringing him to hike with you or something?).

Or perhaps you could find places to go for dinner that have outdoor patios and you could bring the dogs with you?

  • People usually leave their pets in the campground in kennels in the tent or near the tent.  We camp in areas that aren't in the woods, but rather busier campgrounds.  There is always a few people from the group that don't go to dinner and hang out in the middle of all the tent campers.  I'm not worried about him being alone for the hour or two that we're gone to dinner.  I just don't want to put responsibility with someone else each night.

The remainder of the time, the pup will be riding in a special enclosed box on the back of my husbands motorcycle.  (it's not just a box, it's a specially made kennel type box for the passenger seat of his motorcycle.)  He'll be able to go on the rides with us, do some hiking and play with all the other dogs for the weekend.  He loves the motorcycle and loves riding with his doggles.
