My almost 10 year old white german shepherd/golden retriever mix was just diagnosed with diabetes last Saturday. Prior to this, he has been in great health, is in great shape, is not overweight in the least. We woke up two mornings last week to puddles at the back door and I knew something was up so we brought him in.
He is now going to be receiving two doses of Humulin insulin daily and the vet had me switch him from the Chicken Soup for the Large Breed dog food to Hills Prescription W/D with chicken. The Hills is ridiculously expensive and I am a little concerned b/c when I look at the ingredients the very first ingredient is corn and a chicken by-product is the third listed, whereas the Chicken Soup has mainly protein sources for the first few ingredients. I will pay whatever it takes to keep him healthy, but I am just wondering if anyone is aware of any other foods that might be more beneficial. As much as I would love to do a home-cooked diet for him, considering I can barely get a meal on the table for DH, our preschooler, and our baby I don't know if that is feasible.
Also wondering if anyone has any other tips or advice, or knows of any websites where it may be cheaper to order the syringes and insulin compared to the Target pharmacy. I am so sad for him and especially worried about him losing his vision as a very realistic possibility. If anyone has anything to offer in regards to this condition in their pups I would greatly appreciate it!
Re: Canine Diabetes - any experience with it?
We just found our cat has diabetes about two months ago. For the insulin go to Walmart and get the Walmart brand of humilin which is like $28 at least where I live I also get syringes there too and get the small needles you can it makes it easier to give the shots. Order a needle holder online because it's cheaper and a little one is only going to last you a month at best.
We feed ours a mixture of dry and wet food twice a day at the same time he gets his shot. I feed blue buffalo he seems to really like it( I have 3 other cats too) its got alot of the healthy proteins he needs and not tons of carbs. Taurine is really important to make sure the food.
I know this is really overwhelming but it does get easier trust me.
