My IUD slipped

After all the cramping was determined to be NOT normal - thanks, ladies - I went in today for an ultrasound and discovered the IUD was about five inches lower in my uterus than it should have been. The cramps seem to have subsided, so we're letting it stay put for a while (I have my previously scheduled IUD check and annual exam in about two weeks). My doctor says it will either stay where it is or pop out all together (which is rare), and that since I have a Mirena and not a ParaGuard, it's just as effective in the "wrong" place thanks to the hormones.

Also - I'm going to start referring to transvaginal ultrasounds as "going to Virginia." As in, "Today I went to Virginia to get my IUD checked."

Re: My IUD slipped

  • Good for you for trusting your instincts and getting it checked! And LOL at going to Virginia. :)

This is possibly an ignorant question - but I thought a non-pregnant uterus was about the size of your fist or a large pear - so how could it slip down 5 inches? Is it just hanging out in your cervix?? (Sorry if that is a stupid q but I am just trying to visualize it)

Yeah, I could totally be wrong on the measurements - it's probably closer to 3 or 4 inches. Or maybe 5 centimeters. Math sucks! :) The IUD was supposed to be at the top of my uterus, and it was at the bottom, near my cervix.

  • Ah, gotcha. I just realized it was probably creepy too that I said that I was trying to visualize your uterus - HA!

  • "going to Virginia" LOL.  Very nice way of describing the dildo cam.  After IF, I got to know the dildo cam too often.

Great to hear everything is still alright and hope the cramps do go away!

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.
