French bulldog owners...

My frenchie is a little over 4 months old. We went to the vet yesterday and he weighs 16.4 lbs. I was shocked and asked if I should cut down on his food and the vet said no. When I looked online it said he should weigh 8-12 lbs. Am I worrying for nothing? Can anyone tell me I'd their frenchie weighed this much at this age?

Re: French bulldog owners...

  • Our female Frenchie is almost a year old and she is 17lbs.  She is on the smaller end, but you definitely seem to have a big boy on your hands.

Does he seem overweight or just larger?  I think they are only supposed to be 16-28 lbs total.

  • I don't think he looks overweight maybe just a little broad.  My vet said he would be big, but the breeder said she thinks he'll be average size because the sire was only 25 lbs.  I know they should be no more than 28 lbs once full grown and I'm worried because his weight is getting close and he's not even 4.5 months yet.
  • I'm not sure if puppies are different, but what is his body shape like?  Can you feel the ribs easily or is there noticeable fat?  I find that to be a better indicator of a healthy weight.

  • I can feel his ribs slightly.  I feel like he still has to "grow into his skin" a bit.  He has some extra skin/fat around his neck.
