Bear got spayed today

The German Shepherd...  Poor girl.  I had to coax her out of the car and then she only made it a few feet in the door before she decided to lay down and she has been in the same spot since.  Anyway, she's been groaning a lot...does that mean she's in pain?  Should I give her a pain pill?  Is it too soon and I should hold off?  The instructions they gave me on the pain pills are not nearly as specific as I would like them to be.  Ugh I just want to cuddle her and make her feel better.

Re: Bear got spayed today

  • My boxer, Seamus was neutered on Thursday.  His instructions were to give pain meds every 12 hours for three days starting on Friday.  Whatever they gave her during the surgery should be sufficient for tonight.  JMO, I'm not a vet.  Good luck.

Anytime I've needed pain pills they told me to start the next morning as well. She might still be groggy from the anesthesia, hence the groaning. If its not whining I wouldn't be as concerned. If she's whining and seems to be in actual pain to the point of being unable to sleep I'd probably call the vet.

  • Definitely start the next morning.  She likely is still having some effects from the anesthesia.  Plus the anesthesia and pain meds sometimes don't mix.  Just try to make her as comfortable as you can.

  • I wanted to add, my vet compared a neuter or spay in animals to a human having a broken bone.  They also said animals are typically back to their normal shelves within 3 days.

  • Wow, when Emma my GSD was spayed they didn't give us any pain medication.

She layed in her kennel all night and by the next morning was fine :)
